Alverno Earns Road Split With Lawrence

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

APPLETON, Wis. -- Alverno College earned a doubleheader split with host Lawrence University this afternoon at Whiting Field in nonconference action. The Inferno won the opening game 6-4, while the host Vikings took the nightcap 9-0.

In game one the Inferno (7-11) put up a second-inning run for a 1-0 lead after a lead-off hit by Roxanne Kresmer (South Milwaukee, Wis.) came around to score on an RBI-infield-single by Bre Hart (Racine, Wis./Park).

The top of the fifth saw three more Inferno runs score as Stef Wilmore (Elkhart, Ind./Central) began the scoring on a safety squeeze via a Kresmer RBI-sacrifice bunt. Lauren Colette (Antioch, Ill.) laced a single up the middle to plate Chelsea Gulbronson (Milwaukee/Pius XI) and a Megan Rossi (Hammond, Ind./Morton) double to left field scored Colette.

Gulbronson and Kresmer would plate a pair of insurance runs -- which the Inferno would need -- in the top of the sixth to take a 6-0 into the Vikings' last at bat of the game.

Right-hander Erin Dulek (Rosholt, Wis.) limited the Vikings to just two hits through the first six innings, but the host team finally started to hit the rookie hurler in the seventh. The Vikings put up five hits and four runs, including a three-run home run by Cathy Kaye, to force the Inferno to make a change in the circle with two outs and the tying run at bat.

Jamie Villalobos (Antioch, Ill.) relieved Dulek and made things interesting by hitting her first batter faced to put the tying run on base. However the lefty got the Vikings' next better to ground out for the final out for her first save of the season.

Kresmer led the offense with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate, while Hart added a pair of hits and a walk in four official at bats.

Lawrence (5-9) continued its offensive momentum into the first inning of game two and used three hits and an Inferno error to plate a pair of runs for an early 2-0 lead.

A pair of Inferno errors in the third inning led to four more Viking runs, all unearned for Villalobos (2-3), but the starter was tagged for two more runs in the fourth, which forced a call to the bullpen. Rossi came in as relief but surrendered another run as the Vikings took a 9-0 lead into the fifth.

The Inferno threatened to end Liz Barthels' (1-1) shutout bid after a pair of walks and an error loaded the bases, but the visitors were unable to score as the game ended after five innings with Lawrence leading by at least eight runs.

Alverno managed just three hits in the nightcap as Ashleigh Sagat (New Berlin, Wis,/Eisenhower), Wilmore and Colette reached safely.

After two-consecutive nonconference series, Alverno returns to Northern Athletics Conference play on Saturday in a twin bill versus Concordia University Chicago. First pitch is scheduled for noon at Alverno Field in Milwaukee.
