Box Score 2 FOREST PARK, Ill. -- Alverno College was still in the running for the sixth and final spot in the Northern Athletics Conference softball tournament entering today's doubleheader at Dominican University, but the hosts swept the Inferno -- 15-1 and 7-1 -- and claimed the last tournament bid.
First-inning jitters got the better of the Inferno in both contests as the Stars (21-19, 14-10 NAC) posted 10 runs in the opening frame of the first game and four in the second game's opening inning. The Inferno was unable to bounce back in either game, and posted just a single run in each outing.
Roxanne Kresmer (South Milwaukee, Wis.) blasted a solo home run in the opening game for Alverno's lone score of the contest. It was the second baseman's second long ball of the season.
Erika Wotnoske (Greenfield, Wis.) collected a pair of hits with a 2-for-2 performance at the plate to lead the Inferno's offense.
Freshman right-hander Erin Dulek (Rosholt, Wis., 8-13) picked up the loss after allowing six runs, the most runs the rookie gave up since the team's opening-week spring trip games.
In game two, juniors Jamie Villalobos (Antioch, Ill.) and Stef Wilmore (Elkhart, Ind./Central) both recorded a pair of hits, as each belted a single and a double. Wilmore's single in the top of the sixth inning plated Bre Hart (Racine, Wis./Park) for the Inferno's only run of game two.
Villalobos (6-7) picked up the loss after surrendering five runs on four hits, while freshman Megan Rossi (Hammond, Ind./Morton) pitched five innings of relief and surrendered just two runs -- one earned -- to the hot hitting Stars.
Alverno (15-21, 8-14 NAC) concludes conference play tomorrow at Alverno Field. The Inferno hosts Milwaukee School of Engineering in a resumption of a doubleheader that began on Saturday, but was halted due to rain. Game one was suspended after the third inning with the Inferno leading 3-1, and will resume at 3:30 p.m. with the second game following.
