Falcons Edge Inferno In Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MEQUON, Wis. -- Alverno College lost a pair of games to host Concordia University Wisconsin in a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader this afternoon in Mequon.

The Falcons (20-12, 15-3 NAC) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win game one, 6-5, and defeated the visiting Inferno (13-17, 6-10 NAC), 2-1, in game two.

In the opening game a Chelsea Gulbronson (Milwaukee/Pius XI) two-run home run in the top of the third tied the game at 2-2, after a pair of Inferno errors in the opening frame allowed the Falcons to take a 2-0 lead. It was Gulbronson's first homer of the season.

Roxanne Kresmer (South Milwaukee, Wis.) followed suit in the fourth inning with a two-run bomb which put the Inferno up 4-2, also her first long ball of the season.

The Falcons would plate a run in the bottom half of the inning -- on another Inferno error -- but the Inferno answered with an RBI-single by Stef Wilmore (Elkhart, Ind./Central) in the fifth to regain the two-run lead, 5-3.

Yet again the Falcons chipped away at the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth to close in, 5-4, and keep the Inferno off the board in the sixth and the seventh, which allowed one last opportunity for the home team.

Concordia put the tying run on base with a lead-off walk to open the bottom of the seventh, and took advantage of Alverno's fourth error of the game as a sacrifice bunt attempt allowed the runner on first to score due to the Inferno's miscue. On the same play, the batter reached third base. On the following play the runner scored as safety squeeze was successful -- on a very close play at home plate -- for the Falcons in walk-off fashion.

Jamie Villalobos (Antioch, Ill.) picked up the loss for the Inferno in the complete game pitched. She scattered five hits and struck out two as just three of her six runs allowed were earned.

Gulbronson led the Inferno offense with a perfect 3-for-3 batting performance, including a walk and two runs scored.

In game two the Inferno jumped out to a 1-0 lead as a Gulbronson double scored Bre Hart (Racine, Wis./Park) in the top of the third.

The Falcons quickly answered in the bottom half with an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1, and in the following inning the hosts led off with a solo home run for a 2-1 lead.

The Inferno managed a pair of base runners in the fifth, but couldn't manage to plate either runner. Alverno was held scoreless the rest of the game as the Falcons came away with the doubleheader sweep.

Erin Dulek (Rosholt, Wis.) picked up the loss in the complete game, as she allowed five hits and a pair of runs while striking out two.

The Inferno -- who out-hit the Falcons 6-5 -- had six different batters hit successfully, but left four on base in the defeat.

Alverno returns to action tomorrow in a home doubleheader versus Wisconsin Lutheran College. The conference twin bill begins at noon at Alverno Field.
