Box Score 2 MILWAUKEE -- Lauren Colette (Antioch, Ill.) hit her first home run of the season and Erika Wotnoske (Greenfield, Wis.) slugged a game-winning double as Alverno College swept visiting Mount Mary College this evening in a nonconference doubleheader at Alverno Field. The Inferno won the opener 11-1 and squeaked out a 3-2 victory in game two.
Junior left-hander Jamie Villalobos (Antioch, Ill.) picked up both wins in the pitching circle to improve her record to 5-5 on the season, which included 2 2/3 innings of relief work in the nightcap.
In the opener the Inferno (13-15) jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after a six-run second inning. During the second frame, Colette drove a 1-2 pitch over the center-field fence with runners on second and third to cap off the rally.
After Alverno gave back a run in the top of the third, the host team tacked on four more runs in the fourth on five hits.
Villalobos allowed the first two batters to reach base in the top of the fifth, but retired the next three in order to end the game after five innings due to the eight-run rule. The southpaw picked up the complete-game victory as she scattered five hits, struck out three and allowed just one run (unearned).
All nine Inferno batters reached safely in the game and eight of the nine recorded a hit, led by Villalobos' game-high three, while Stef Wilmore (Elkhart, Ind./Central), Wotnoske and Megan Rossi (Hammond, Ind./Morton) all added two hits apiece.
The Blue Angels (6-24) hushed the Inferno bats a bit in the second game, but a single up the middle by Colette in the third inning plated a pair of runs as the Inferno took a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth, the Blue Angels capitalized on a couple of miscues by the Alverno defense, and chased Rossi from the circle with a run in and the tying run on third with one out. Villalobos entered the circle in relief, but blew the save as the visitors plated the tying run on a single up the middle.
In the bottom half of the inning Wotnoske came up to the plate with two outs and Wilmore on second. The junior outfielder traded places with Wilmore as she doubled to left-center field for the go-ahead score.
Villalobos retired the final six batters in order to secure her second win of the day. Rossi recorded had three Ks and allowed just four hits and a pair of runs in 4 1/3 innings of work in the start.
Bre Hart (Racine, Wis./Park) led the Inferno with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate with a run scored.
The pair of victories ties head coach Kristin Ortman's season-high of 13 -- which she won in her first year at the helm in 2010 -- and surpassed last year's total of 12.
Alverno returns to action tomorrow in a doubleheader at Carroll University, which will close out this season's nonconference play. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Waukesha.
