Box Score 2 WATERTOWN, Wis. -- Erin Dulek (Rosholt, Wis.) threw her first shutout and Megan Rossi (Hammond, Ind./Morton) blasted her first home run for a grand slam as Alverno College defeated host Maranatha Baptist Bible College, 11-0, in the opening game of a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader this evening at Brandt Quirk Park.
The visiting Inferno (11-13, 6-6 NAC) also won the nightcap, this time in come-from-behind fashion, 4-2, for the season sweep of the Crusaders (6-16, 1-11 NAC).
Alverno connected for 10 hits and three sacrifices to plate the 11 runs, and Dulek (7-8) struck out a career-high 13 batters for the complete-game victory in the opener.
Jamie Villalobos (Antioch, Ill.) began the game with a lead-off walk, stole second base and reached third on a passed ball before Chelsea Gulbronson (Milwaukee/Pius XI) hit a sacrifice fly ball to left field to score Villalobos.
Although that was all Alverno needed for the win, Dulek knocked home a pair of insurance runs with a ground-rule double. Bre Hart (Racine, Wis./Park) added some more runs with a two-RBI single to center to put the Inferno in front, 5-0, in the second inning.
Dulek led off the fourth with another double and Villalobos plated the rookie right-hander with a single in the following at bat, and Dulek had a sacrifice fly in the fifth to put Alverno up 7-0.
Then it was fellow freshman Rossi's turn in the sixth as she came up to bat with two outs and the bases loaded. The rookie third baseman, who flied out to deep center field earlier in the game, blasted the ball even deeper this time up for her first career home run and grand slam.
Dulek retired the side in order to end the game after six innings, as she got into only one jam the entire game after back-to-back hits to lead off the bottom of the fifth. She fanned the next two batters before the final hitter grounded out to her to end the threat.
In the nightcap the Crusaders jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead on a pair of hits and an Inferno error, but the Inferno scored a run in each of the third, fifth, sixth and seventh innings for the comeback win.
Stef Wilmore (Elkhart, Ind./Central) got Alverno on the board with a RBI-double in the third, and Erika Wotnoske (Greenfield, Wis.) scored Wilmore on a single through the left side in the fifth to tie the game, 2-2.
Lauren Colette (Antioch, Ill.) led off the sixth with a single and Villalobos knocked her home for the go-ahead score. Wotnoske plated Wilmore in the seventh on her third hit of the game and second RBI to give Alverno a two-run cushion.
Dulek again retired the side in order for her second complete-game victory of the night. Between the two games she recorded 20 strikeouts, didn't issue a walk and had zero earned runs.
Wotnoske led the Inferno offense with five hits in the twin bill on a 5-of-8 performance.
Alverno continues NAC play with another road series tomorrow at Benedictine University. First pitch is scheduled for noon in Lisle, Ill.
