Alverno Gets First-Ever Victory Over Aurora, Splits Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College recorded its first-ever victory over the visiting Aurora University Spartans in the first game of today's Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader at Alverno Field. The host Inferno defeated the Spartans 5-3 in the opener, but lost the nightcap 9-2 for the season split.

Alverno (9-13, 4-6 NAC) used a four-run fifth inning to take the lead and its defense held Aurora (11-11, 7-3 NAC) scoreless the final two innings for the win. It was the first win in 12 games versus the Spartans.

After Jamie Villalobos (Antioch, Ill.) reached base on an Aurora error for the third-straight time in the bottom of the fifth, Bre Hart (Racine, Wis./Park) had a bunt-single to place a second Inferno runner on base.

A second error by the Spartans' shortstop in the inning allowed Chelsea Gulbronson (Milwaukee/Pius XI) to load the bases for clean-up hitter Stef Wilmore (Elkhart, Ind./Central), who plated Villalobos on an infield single.

A Roxanne Kresmer (South Milwaukee, Wis.) walk would score another run, and a pair of RBI-singles by Lauren Colette (Antioch, Ill.) and Erika Wotnoske (Greenfield, Wis.) put the Inferno in front, 5-3.

The Inferno scored their first run in the fourth inning after a lead-off single by Wilmore came around to score. Megan Rossi (Hammond, Ind./Morton) knocked home Wilmore on a RBI-single to left-center field.

Freshman right-hander Erin Dulek (Rosholt, Wis.) allowed just two hits in the final two innings, and didn't allow the Spartans to score as she picked up the complete-game victory for the Inferno. Dulek (5-8) recorded four strikeouts and no walks as she allowed just one earned run on the Spartans' eight hits. She recovered from a jam in the first inning, allowing just one run to score, and stranded runners at the corners.

The Spartans' Natalie Zanella (6-8) also had four strikeouts and just one earned run, but couldn't overcome four walked batters and four errors by her defense as she went the distance in the loss.

Wilmore was 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs scored and a RBI, while Villalobos didn't record a hit, but reached base in all four plate appearances with a walk and three reaches on error.

In game two Alverno struck first with a pair of first-inning runs. Villalobos had a lead-off single and scored on a single by Wilmore. Gulbronson crossed home plate after the Spartans' starter, Ashley Kellenberger (4-1), had her third walk of the inning, and walked Rossi with the bases loaded.

The Spartans got a run in the second, and then added eight more on seven hits and two Inferno errors over the next two innings to take a 9-2 lead.

After the first, Alverno was only able to put up three more hits the remainder of the game, and two double plays by the Spartans' defense ended two of the Inferno's scoring threats.

Kellenberger went the distance for the Spartans with four walks, two strikeouts and a pair of earned runs, while Villalobos (3-4) went the full seven for the Inferno and picked up the loss with two Ks, one walked batter and seven earned runs.

Wilmore was a perfect 3-for-3 in the game and with her five hits on the day moved up to third on Alverno's all-time list, now with 110 career hits.

Alverno in next in action on Friday at Maranatha Baptist in a NAC doubleheader scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
