Alverno Splits Again At Cusic Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Alverno College earned another split in the Inferno's third day of competition at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. The Inferno defeated Rochester Institute of Technology, 6-4, in the opening game and then dropped a 7-4 decision to Finlandia University. It was the third 1-1 day for the Inferno (3-3) at the Cusic Classic.

In the win over RIT, junior southpaw Jamie Villalobos (Antioch, Ill.) pitched the full seven innings, and gave up just three hits and one earned run for her second victory of the season. Villalobos (2-0) fanned six Tigers batters, walked just one, and helped her own cause with a 2-for-3 hitting performance with a pair of runs scored.

Alverno was the first to strike after a lead-off double by Villalobos came around to score. The lefty again crossed home plate after a lead-off hit in the third inning was pushed home on a Chelsea Gulbronson (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) double to center field.

RIT (4-2) plated its first run in the bottom of the third, but Stef Wilmore (Elkhart, Ind./Hammond) sent the first pitch of the fourth inning over the left-field fence for her first home run of the season to respond, and Roxanne Kresmer's (South Milwaukee, Wis.) one-out walk would come around to score for a 4-1 lead.

The Tigers answered in the bottom of the fourth with three unearned runs to deadlock the game at 4-4, and neither team scored in the following two innings.

Gulbronson, who was 3-for-3 in the game, began the seventh with a triple, followed by a Ashleigh Sagat (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) walk. Sagat swiped second base, and Gulbronson scored on the throw to second to put the Inferno in front. Wilmore then plated Sagat for the Inferno's final score on a single to center for her third hit of the contest.

Villalobos finished off her strong day in the circle and retired the Tigers in order for the 6-4 victory.

The Inferno took advantage of a pair of Finlandia (6-2) errors in the opening inning of game two with three runs, including a sacrifice fly by rookie Kim Gemmel (Racine, Wis./Lutheran).

The Lions would score once in the second and add three in the third for a 4-3 advantage, but Wilmore's second homer of the day, again to left field, tied the game, 4-4. The home run put the junior catcher into a tie atop the Alverno record book with Lindsey Terzis (2002-05) with seven career homers.

A lead-off walk came back around to score and put the Lions ahead in the fourth inning, while two more were added in the seventh as the Inferno didn't have an answer and for the 7-4 defeat.

Wilmore, Sagat and Kresmer had two hits apiece while Villalobos had the Inferno's only other extra-base hit with a double in the fourth.

Rookie right-hander Erin Dulek (Rosholt, Wis.) picked up the decision in the circle with five Ks and five earned runs in seven innings pitched.

Alverno competes in its final day at the Cusic Classic on Wednesday with a pair of morning games. The Inferno takes on Clark University (Mass.) at 9 and Wilmington College of Ohio at 11 a.m. (EST).
