Falcons Spoil Inferno's Homecoming Rally

Box Score

MILWAUKEE -- The Alverno College Inferno lost a tough battled four-set match to the visiting Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons tonight in Reiman Gymnasium in the Inferno's homecoming match.

The Northern Athletics Conference contest went back-and-forth as the Falcons won the first set 25-19, followed by an Inferno 27-25 second-set victory. The Falcons edged the Inferno in the third set by just two points, 25-23, and finally won the match in the fourth frame, 25-14, in the least-competitive portion of the night.

Throughout the match, the teams exchanged 15 lead changes and evened it up with 28 ties.

Down set point, 24-22, in the second, the Inferno used a 5-1 rally to take the set in extra points. Michelle Lingle served up one of her career-high three aces to put Alverno up, and Emma Ortner secured the set-win with one of her match and career-high 18 kills on the night. The 18 kills by Ortner tied teammate Cali Trepp's four-set school record, set just a week ago.

The Inferno led in the third by as many as six and were up, 22-19, before the Falcons stole the Inferno's role from the previous set and rallied on a 6-1 run to end the round, 25-23.

The momentum stayed with the visitors in the fourth and final set as they jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead, and cruised to the 25-14 set, and 3-1 match victory.

The Inferno (3-16, 0-7 NAC) hit a respectable .132 on the night, but the Falcons (5-17, 2-5 NAC) bested the hosts with a .184 attack percentage.

Trepp added 17 kills and Mariah Arterberry chipped in nine on the attack, while Reagan Owen broke Alverno's single-match assists record with 43 on the night. The former record of 41 was set by Amanda Kubusek back in 2003 and matched by Owen earlier this season.

Defensively the Inferno had a season high 92 digs on the night, as six Inferno players had double-digit digs. Owen and Trepp had 18 apiece, Ortner and Chelsea Gulbronson 17 each, while Nava Moniriarani dug 11 and Devon Gorman 10.

The Inferno gets right back to action tomorrow as the travel crosstown to face hosts Wisconsin Lutheran College at 2 p.m.
