Raiders' rally overcomes Inferno's early lead

Box Score

MILWAUKEE -- Alverno opened tonight's match versus visiting Milwaukee School of Engineering with a 26-24 extra-points win, but let a 22-20 advantage in the second set slip away and eventually lost to the Raiders, 3-1, in Reiman Gymnasium.

The Inferno (3-16, 0-4 Northern Athletics Conference) trailed 18-11 in the opening set, but fought back to tie things up at 23-23 and took the set 26-24.

The second set went back and forth, but Alverno took the 22-20 lead on a service ace by Mai Kaw Xiong (Milwaukee/Riverside), and looked to have control of the match. Yet after a MSOE (7-12, 1-3) timeout, the Inferno would close out the set on five-straight offensive errors for the 25-22 loss.

MSOE rallied in the final two sets (25-11, 25-15) for the four-set victory.

Morgan Stuckey (Duncanville, Texas) led the Inferno offense with 11 kills, while Linda Vang (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln) added 10 and Maryah Arterberry (Brawley, Calif./Brawley Union) had six.

Reagan Owen (Salina, Kan./Central) had a team-high 16 digs for the Alverno defense, while Shelby Metzger (Montreal, Mo./Camdenton) had 11 digs and added 29 assists for the double-double.

Alverno looks to quickly bounce back from the loss with a conference match at Rockford tomorrow evening.
