MILWAUKEE -- The Alverno College Inferno won their season-opening match by a score of 3-2 over visiting Presentation College today in Reiman Gymnasium at the 2011 Alverno Classic. It was just the second time in the history that Alverno has started the season with a victory, the first came in 2008.

In their second match of the day, Alverno lost 3-0 to the University of Wisconsin-Superior, one of the two teams (Mt. Mary College) to go 2-0 in day one of the tournament.

Down 2-1 to Presentation after three sets, the Inferno took the final two sets, as they battled back from an 11-6 deficit in the fifth for the 15-13 win.

Trailing 13-10, freshman setter Shelby Metzger (Montreal, Mo./Camdenton) recorded her 10th kill of the game followed by a pair of service aces to tie things up at 13-13. The rookie then set up teammate Sarah Wilert's (East Troy, Wis.) for the match-winning point.

Metzger recorded a triple-double in her first collegiate contest adding 12 digs and a match-high 24 assists to her 10 kills. She connected on over 41 percent of her attacks and also had a match-best four aces to lead the Inferno to victory.

Morgan Stuckey (Duncanville, Texas) and Cali Trepp (Iron Mountain, Mich./Niagara) led the defense with 15 digs apiece while Reagan Owen (Salina, Kan./Central) added 14. Stuckey also added nine kills and a pair of aces on offense.

Versus UW-Superior, the Inferno (1-1) lost in three sets (25-16, 25-21, 25-18). Metzger was just a kill away from her second triple-double with team-highs in digs (15), assists (11) and kills (9) and had a .471 attack-percentage in the match.

The Yellowjackets' offense was too accurate, with a .267 attack percentage compared to the Inferno's .079 mark.

The Inferno continue play in the Alverno Classic tomorrow, hosting Northland College at 11 a.m. and crosstown rival Mt. Mary at 5 p.m.
