Eagles top Inferno in first conference match of season

ELMHURST, Ill. -- Alverno struggled in its Northern Athletics Conference opening match of 2011, posting a 3-0 loss to host Benedictine. The match was played at Elmhurst College, due to flood damage to Benedictine's Rice Center.

The host Eagles (6-4, 1-0 NAC) started off the match by connecting on .310 of their attack attempts, while the Inferno (2-7, 0-1) had six miscues in the opening set for a -.120 attack percentage, and fell 25-12.

Alverno had six more attack errors in the second set, a 25-13 loss, and seven in the final set, also a 25-13 loss, to finish with a .-141 attack percentage versus Benedictine's .213 mark.

Morgan Stuckey (Duncanville, Texas) led the Inferno offense with six of the teams 10 kills, and also added one of the team's two aces in the match. Shelby Metzger (Montreal, Mo./Camdenton) assisted on all 10 successful attempts.

Defensively Reagan Owen (Salina, Kan./Central) had a team-high nine digs, while Stuckey added seven and Cali Trepp (Iron Mountain, Mich./Niagara) added five.

Alverno gets back to action on Saturday at Lawrence, taking on the host Vikings, as well as Edgewood and Cardinal Stritch in the quad-team event.
