Inferno swept in conference finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FOND DU LAC, Wis. -- Costly errors in game one and an anemic offense in game two led to a doubleheader sweep of Alverno College by host Marian University this afternoon the clubs' Northern Athletics Conference finale of the 2011 season.

The Inferno (10-28, 7-17 NAC) took a two-run lead after the top of the first in game one, but the Sabres (13-24, 12-12) took advantage of an Inferno error and plated four unearned runs in the bottom-half of the frame for the 4-2 lead.

Another Sabre unearned run in the third would make it 5-2, the final score of the opening game.

Marian pitcher Cherise Waltz fanned 14 Inferno batters in the complete game victory, while Inferno left-hander Jamie Villalobos (Antioch, Ill.) tied her career-high with six strikeouts. Villalobos (5-13) picked up the loss but didn't allow an earned run in six innings of work.

Stef Wilmore (Elkhart, Ind./Central) was 3-for-3 with a RBI for the Inferno, while rookies Kellee Laske (Milwaukee/Pius) and Chelsea Gulbronson (Milwaukee/Pius) each connected for two hits.

Alverno outhit Marian 8-7 in the game, but left seven runners on base.

In game two the Inferno offense managed only two hits as Wilmore and Ashleigh Sagat (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) each reached on singles and lost 7-0.

The Sabres scored their seven runs on just six hits, but again took advantage of three Inferno errors as only three runs were earned. Stephanie Klees (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton) picked up the loss after allowing the three earned runs in four innings.

Without a win in their final conference doubleheader, the Inferno still managed to tie the single-season school record for conference wins this season with seven, set last season in head coach Kristin Ortman's first year at the helm.

Alverno will close out the season with a nonconference doubleheader at home on Tuesday versus Mt. Mary College.
