Inferno splits with Raiders

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College was just three outs away from a doubleheader sweep of host MSOE today in downtown Milwaukee, but let the opening game slip away and settled for a split in the series with each game ending 2-1.

In game one the Inferno (7-23, 4-12 Northern Athletics Conference) took an early 1-0 lead as Stef Wilmore (Elkhart, Ind./Central) was knocked home by Erika Wotnoske's (Greenfield, Wis.) RBI-single to left field.

Rookie right-hander Emily Snell (Denmark, Wis.) pitched six innings of scoreless ball, and was relieved in the bottom of the seventh after allowing a leadoff double -- the only extra-base hit of the game -- to the Raiders (8-16, 6-10 NAC). Stephanie Klees (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton) took over in the circle but allowed three more Raider hits and surrendered the walk-off hit with two outs remaining for the 2-1 loss.

Wotnoske had two of the Inferno's seven hits in the game and their sole RBI.

In game two the Inferno again struck first as Chelsea Gulbronson (Milwaukee/Pius) pushed Bre Hart (Racine, Wis./Park) across for the score on a shot to left field in the top of the third.

In the sixth, Snell's RBI-single scored Wilmore to give the Inferno the 2-0 lead, and would eventually be the game-winning run.

Left-hander Jamie Villalobos (Antioch, Ill.) pitched six shutout innings, before she allowed a run in the bottom of the seventh. She then allowed two Raider base runners with just one out, but got out of the jam for the complete-game victory.

Gulbronson and Ashleigh Sagat (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) each hit 2-for-4 in the game to lead the Inferno offense.

Alverno returns to action on Monday versus Rockford College in a NAC doubleheader at 3 p.m. The two Inferno seniors, Megan Burgess (Racine, Wis./Park) and Andrea Derrick (Greenfield, Wis.), will be honored in between games at "Senior Day".
