Box Score 2 KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Alverno College got behind early in its first game and couldn't hold on to a four-run lead in the nightcap as it dropped a pair of season-opening games this evening at the Rebel Spring Games outside of Orlando. The Inferno lost to Wittenberg University 5-2 and then to Albion College 11-10 in 9 innings.
Three Inferno errors in the first two innings gave Wittenberg a 5-0 advantage in game one and the Inferno we unable to bounce back. Bre Hart (Racine, Wis./Park) would finally put Alverno on the board as she knocked home Chelsea Gulbronson (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) on a single to right field in the third.
Gulbronson would tack on another run in the bottom of the seventh, reaching base on a triple and scoring on a Wittenberg (1-1) error.
In game two the Inferno (0-2) would be the team to capitalize on its opponent's early mistakes, exploding for five runs in the top of the third on two Albion errors and a wild pitch.
Roxanne Kresmer (South Milwaukee, Wis.) punched home Megan Burgess (Racine, Wis./Park) on single through the right side, followed by a Gulbronson walk, and a Stef Wilmore (Elkhart, Ind./Central) two-RBI-double.
Ashleigh Sagat (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) would send Gulbronson home for the score on a sacrifice fly, and Wilmore would add the fifth and final run on an Albion error.
The Britons (2-0) answered back with two runs in the bottom of the inning, chasing Alverno's starter, Stephanie Klees (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton) after two-and-one-third, but Emily Snell (Denmark, Wis.) took out the final two batters of the inning in quick fashion.
Natalie Petrie (Franklin, Wis.), Erika Wotnoske (Greenfield, Wis.) and Burgess would all record RBIs in the fifth which gave Alverno a 8-4 lead, but four runs by Albion in the bottom of the in inning tied things up.
Jamie Villalobos (Antioch, Ill.) relieved Snell in the fifth, and would finish off the game for the Inferno after her complete seven-inning game versus Wittenberg, recording both decisions on the day.
Each team would score in the seventh , but a hitless eighth forced another extra inning.
Using the International Tiebreaking Rule, Wilmore began the inning on second base and after a sac bunt was sent home as Petrie recorded her second RBI of the game.
The Britons opened the bottom of the ninth with a pair of bunts to load the bases and tie the game before their third baseman Samantha Kolling would get the walk-off walk on a full count to end the game.
Alverno doesn't get much time to reflect on the losses as it will play a pair of games on Sunday morning. The Inferno takes on Walsh University at 9 and Defiance College at 11.
