Box Score 2 MILWAUKEE -- The Alverno College offense pounded out 33 runs on 15 hits in a doubleheader sweep of crosstown rival Mt. Mary College this evening at Alverno Field. It was the Inferno's home-opener. The Inferno took game one 21-1, and followed that up with a 12-4 victory ending both nonconference games in five innings due to the eight-run rule.
In the first game the Inferno (3-7 overall) scored eight runs in both the first and third innings for the bulk of their scoring. Rookie shortstop Chelsea Gulbronson (Milwaukee/Pius XI) capped off the third with a grand slam, her first career home run.
The visiting Blue Angels (0-8) would score their only run of the game in the top of the fourth, but freshman Emily Snell (Denmark, Wis.) quickly got the run back with a lead-off homer in the bottom of the inning for her first career long ball.
Sophomore second baseman Roxanne Kresmer (South Milwaukee, Wis.) had a game-high three hits in just four at bats for the Inferno.
Southpaw Jamie Villalobos (2-5) picked up the complete-game victory as she fanned four batters, walked just two and allowed three hits in the near shutout.
In the nightcap Mt. Mary scored four runs in the first three innings on rookie right-hander Stephanie Klees (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton). But along with her five strikeouts, Klees (1-1) got the run support she needed to pull out her first career win as the Inferno offense scored seven runs in the bottom of the second to secure the lead for good.
Kresmer led the offense again with a pair of doubles in three at bats. In addition to her three RBIs in game two, she finished the day with eight.
The Inferno begin conference play this weekend as they take on host Concordia University Chicago in a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader on Saturday, followed by another road doubleheader at Aurora University on Sunday. First pitch for both twin bills is noon.
