Inferno battles, but falls to Falcons

Box Score

MEQUON, Wis. -- The Alverno volleyball team battled with defending Northern Athletics Conference champion Concordia Wisconsin tonight in Mequon, but lost in four close sets, 3-1, to the hosts Falcons.

The Inferno (3-19, 0-7 NAC) trailed 24-23 in the opening set, but a kill by Chelsea Gulbronson (Milwaukee/Pius XI) started the 3-0 swing for the visitors, who took the set in extra points, 26-24.

In the second frame the Inferno trailed by as many as six points, but battled back to cut the Falcons' lead to two at 22-20. Unable to take the lead, the Inferno lost the set 25-22, as the Falcons evened the match 1-1.

Set three was a back-and-forth battle, and the Inferno took their first and only lead of the set, 13-12, on a kill by Shelby Metzger (Montreal, Mo./Camdenton). But the Falcons answered with three straight points and rallied their two-point lead to another 25-22 victory.

The final set of the match played out nearly identical to the second set, as the Inferno cut the lead to two, but lost the set for the third time of the night by a 25-22 score, for the 3-1 loss.

Defensively, the Inferno tied a season-best by committing just two serve-receive errors on the night. Five Alverno players recorded double-digit digs led by Reagan Owen's (Salina, Kan./Central) team-high 17.

Morgan Stuckey (Duncanville, Texas) added 16, Metzger 11, and Ashley Graham (Cudahy, Wis.) and Sara Willert (East Troy, Wis.) dug 10 apiece.

Maryah Arterberry (Brawley, Calif.) recorded five blocks (1 solo) to add to the Inferno defensive efforts.

Offensively, Linda Vang (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln) tallied 11 kills and Stuckey added 11 as well to record her second double-double of the season. Metzger added nine kills to go along with her 11 digs and 32 assists, and just missed out on her second triple-double of the season.

The Inferno get little time to reflect on the match, as they host Wisconsin Lutheran in a conference match at 11 a.m. Saturday morning.
