Alverno sets conference wins mark in split with Lakeland

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PLYMOUTH, Wis. -- Alverno College defeated host Lakeland College 3-1 in game one of a doubleheader for their seventh conference win this season, the most in the nine-year history of the program.

"That was just a great conference win and it was just a bonus to break that record," Alverno head coach Kristin Kosobucki said. "It's a great step in building the Alverno softball program. It really shows how much the team has improved throughout the year and how we'll continue to develop. Hopefully we'll be able to add to the total and get some more (wins) this weekend."

The previous single-season record for conference wins of six was set in 2007 and tied in 2008. Alverno has four games remaining in its conference schedule to try and add to this season's current total.

The Inferno came out with bats swinging as the first four Alverno batters laced base hits, including a two-RBI single up the middle by senior pitcher Jessica Goetz (Milwaukee, Wis./Martin Luther).

Goetz would then do her part on defense, striking out batters for six of the first nine outs. Her third strikeout of the game--the first out of the second inning--was her 200th this season, adding to her single-season and career records.

In the top of the seventh inning freshman first baseman Jamie Villalobos (Antioch, Ill.) would smash a double to center field for the team's eighth hit of the game and her third hit. Goetz would send her home on the next at bat on a base hit to center field for the team's third run and the 3-1 lead.

Goetz would record her 10th and 11th strikeouts of the game in the seventh for a three-up, three-down inning to seal the victory. The right-hander would surrender one run (unearned) and scatter five hits in the game for her 13th victory of the season.

In addition to Goetz and Villalobos, freshman center fielder Bre Hart (Racine, Wis./Park) would record multiple hits in the game with a 2-for-4 performance and scored one run.

In game two the host Muskies (20-16, 13-7 Northern Athletics Conference) would strike first, scoring two runs on two hits and two errors in the bottom of the opening inning for the 2-0 lead. Lakeland would add three runs in third inning and three more in the fourth as the Inferno bats went cold, leading 8-0 heading into the fifth.

In the top of the inning the Inferno offense would finally string some hits together, scoring four runs on three hits and an error. Junior shortstop Megan Burgess (Racine, Wis./Park) would score the first run for Alverno on an errant throw by Lakeland, and then freshman second baseman Roxanne Kresmer (South Milwaukee, Wis.) would score a pair on a two-RBI double to left field.

Villalobos would send Kresmer home on a sacrifice fly for the final run of the inning.

Unfortunately Lakeland would match the Inferno's scoring with four runs of their own for the 12-4 lead, ending the game after just five innings.

Goetz picked up the loss for Alverno in the game after 2.1 innings, surrendering five runs on seven hits and recorded three strikeouts, bringing her season record to 13-20.

Kresmer and junior left fielder Andrea Derrick (Greenfield, Wis.) would each record a pair of hits in the nightcap and score a run to lead the Alverno offense.

The Inferno (13-23, 7-13 NAC) are next in action this Saturday as they host Edgewood College in a doubleheader at Alverno Field at noon. The Inferno's lone senior, Goetz, will be honored between games on 'Senior Day'.
