Inferno swept by Eagles

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LISLE, Ill. -- Alverno College could only muster seven hits while the host Eagles of Benedictine University connected for 20 in a doubleheader sweep of the Inferno this afternoon at the Sports Complex in Lisle by scores of 8-0 and 9-2.

The first game remained scoreless until the Eagles (15-4, 4-0 NAC) exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on six hits and one costly error by the visiting Inferno.

Benedictine began the inning with just their second hit of the game at that time, a lead-off double to center field. The next batter reached on an infield error and that started the scoring which led to eight runs, only two of which were earned to senior pitcher Jessica Goetz (Milwaukee, Wis./Martin Luther).

The Inferno (7-13, 2-4 NAC) responded with only a single hit in the top of the fifth--just their fourth of the game-- forcing an early end to the contest after only five innings.

Alverno gave up runs in each of the first three innings of game two, trailing 9-0 and looking at another possible early finish, until the offense came alive in the top of the fourth for a pair of runs scored by freshman catcher Stef Wilmore (Elkhart, Ind./Central) and freshman second baseman Roxanne Kresmer (South Milwaukee, Wis.).

Wilmore, who reached on a walk, scored on a wild pitch, while Kresmer crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly to left field by freshman first baseman Jamie Villalobos (Antioch, Ill.).

Junior shortstop Megan Burgess (Racine, Wis./Park) and freshman third baseman Natalie Petrie (Franklin, Wis.) would each record a pair of hits in the twin bill in five at bats.

Goetz pitched all 10 innings today picking up the pair of decisions to fall to 7-10 on the year.

The Inferno are next in action on Monday at Carroll University for a nonconference doubleheader, before hosting Aurora University for a pair of NAC contests on Tuesday. Both first pitches are scheduled for 3 p.m.
