Inferno torches Aurora, sets school shooting percentage record

Box Score

AURORA, Ill. -- Alverno College set a new school record, shooting 57.6 percent from the field, as they defeated host Aurora University 91-67 tonight in a Northern Athletics Conference game at Thornton Gymnasium.

The Inferno shot 34-for-59 in the game, breaking the previous record of 57.1 percent set less than a month ago in a 76-57 win against Edgewood College. The win is the first victory over Aurora in series history, and the 91 points is the most by any team in the conference this season.

"After we left Benedictine on Monday we really knew that offensively we needed to share the basketball better and be more active," Alverno had coach Brad Duckworth said. "Tonight was a byproduct of that as we had extremely unselfish play leading to open shot after open shot."

Alverno had a season-high 21 assists tonight, led by senior guard Lisa Sorgi's (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield) game-high seven assists. Sorgi also had game-highs of 22 points and 11 rebounds, as she came up just three assists short of a triple-double.

The host Spartans (6-14, 5-10 NAC) took an early 6-5 lead, but the Inferno would respond with a 20-2 run to take the lead at 25-8 and never look back.

Alverno shot a blistering 61.8 percent (21-of-34) from the field in the first half taking a 50-32 lead into the locker room at the half. Aurora would cut the lead to 15, with just over 15 minutes to play, but that would be as close as the team would get the rest of the night as the Inferno would increase their lead by as many as 29 towards the end of the game.

Rachel Diedrich (Two Rivers, Wis.) had 18 points for the Inferno, shooting 8-of-10 from the free-throw line, while Kelsey Kochanowski (Oak Creek, Wis.) added a career-high 17, and Gabby Allen (Milwaukee, Wis./Bay View) had 15.

Junior guard Shataya McComb (Kingston, N.Y.) chipped in seven points to go along with her game-high six steals.

The Alverno career blocked shots record, set by Kim Murray (2003-06), was broken twice tonight. Allen came into the game tied with Murray at 56 career blocks, and recorded her 57th block at the 18:52 mark in the first half.

Diedrich, who had 53 blocks coming into tonight, recorded her fifth block of the night and 58th career block, with 10:14 left in the second half to set the new career record in her rookie season.

The Inferno improve to 11-9 overall on the season (9-5 NAC), tying the school record for wins in a season with five regular season games remaining. They are next in action this Saturday as they host Rockford College for a 2 p.m. start.
