NAC Quarterfinal: Alverno ends season in overtime loss to Lakeland

Box Score

PLYMOUTH, Wis. -- Upset-minded Alverno College fell to host Lakeland College 67-61 in overtime in a Northern Athletics Conference tournament quarterfinal game tonight at  Woltzen Gymnasium outside of Sheboygan.

Alverno, the No. 6 seed, ends the season with a 13-13 record, the best season in the 10 year history of the program. The Muskies, the tournament's No. 3 seed, improve to 20-6 and advance to play No. 2 Wisconsin Lutheran College in the NAC semifinals.

"When I took the job in 2007," Alverno head coach Brad Duckworth said. "If you would have told me 3 years later I'm in the tournament, and Lakeland beats us in overtime, and we made their season because they had a chance to avenge a loss to us, I'd say we did pretty good things. Unfortunately that doesn't make the hurt go away at the moment. I'm hurting, and the team is hurting. What a great game. What a fun college basketball game tonight."

Alverno defeated the Muskies 61-55 back on January 9, in a come-from-behind victory in Sheboygan.

The Inferno faced their largest deficit of the night at 31-39 with just under 11 minutes to play in regulation, but then went on to score 10-straight points, including a 3-pointer by Shataya McComb (Kingston, N.Y.) for the 41-39 lead, forcing a Lakeland timeout at 8:26.

The Muskies would answer back with a 5-0 run to take a three-point lead, 44-41, with 7:38 to go. The lead would go back-and-forth over the next 3 minutes until the Muskies would take a 54-50 lead with just under 4 minutes to play.

Gabby Allen (Milwaukee, Wis./Bay View) would then score the next five points of the game for the 55-54 Inferno lead with 2:45 remaining in regulation.

Lakeland would score on a free throw and a fast break layup over the next 50 seconds for the 57-55 advantage, while the Inferno would turn the ball over on two-straight possessions.

Lakeland controlled the ball with 59 seconds to go, but the Inferno defense would hold, as sophomore Alicia Kontowski (South Milwaukee, Wis.) came up with the steal, giving the visitors a chance to tie the game.

The Inferno would not be stopped on offense this possession as Kelsey Kochanowski (Oak Creek, Wis.) hit Rachel Diedrich (Two Rivers, Wis.) on a nice lob pass from the top of the key and Diedrich put it away for the game-tying bucket with 22 seconds to play.

The Inferno would then force a turnover as Kochanowski stole the ball with 5 seconds remaining, and her half-court shot at the buzzer would hit the front of the rim as time expired forcing overtime.

Alverno would take the two-point lead in overtime, as Allen was fouled behind the arc and hit 2-of-3 free throws for the 59-57 Inferno lead. The Muskies would answer back with five-straight points for a 62-59 lead with just over 2 minutes to go.

Senior guard Lisa Sorgi (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield) then hit a pair of free throws closing the gap to two, with 1:28 remaining, and Alverno's defense would hold the Muskies on the next possession. Diedrich's layup attempt just rimmed out, and the Muskies scored for the 65-61 advantage with 18 seconds left on the clock.

The Inferno would twice turn the ball over and be forced to foul, as Lakeland hit their free throws for the 67-61 final.

"I couldn't say more about these ladies," Duckworth said."I'm a touch emotional right now, I just had to say goodbye to the greatest player I have ever coached. This program has a lot to owe to No. 22 Lisa Sorgi. She got this program started and going in the right direction."

Sorgi would finish the game with 11 points--finishing her career as the school's all-time leader with 1,244 career points--and a team-high nine rebounds.

Allen led all scorers with 22 points, shooting 11-of-15 from the free-throw line, to go along with her game-high five assists.

Kochanowski added nine points and three assists, while Kontowski and Diedrich each chipped in seven.

Diedrich also had eight rebounds, and set the Alverno single-game record with 13 blocked shots, surpassing her previous mark of seven in a game set earlier this season.

"It was a special year, even though we didn't end like we wanted to," Duckworth said.
