Box Score MILWAUKEE -- Host MSOE defeated Alverno College 69-57 tonight, ending the Inferno's run at the Northern Athletics Conference South Division crown.
The Inferno finish the NAC regular season at 11-7 and are 13-11 overall. Wisconsin Lutheran College defeated Dominican University tonight and secured the South Division title with a 12-6 record in the conference.
"We didn't lose the (South Division) championship tonight," Alverno head coach Brad Duckworth said. "It's okay to lose some on the road. We lost it when we lost at home to Aurora, Benedictine and Dominican."
Alverno, the top shooting team in the NAC, managed to hit only 29 percent (9-of-31) of its first half attempts tonight, though shot well from the free-throw line (7-of-8) and the 3-point arc (6-of-14) in the game. The team also committed 21 turnovers, compared to MSOE's 14.
The Raiders led 33-21 at the break, but the Inferno came out hot at the beginning of the second half, outscoring the Raiders 16-3, taking just their second lead of the game, 37-36, with 11 minutes, 14 seconds to play.
MOSE made the Inferno's lead short-lived, tying up the score at 39-39, then used an 8-0 run to take the 47-39 lead and never looked back.
Junior point guard Gabby Allen (Milwaukee, Wis./Bay View) was one of three Inferno players in double-digits and led the Inferno with 15 points. Senior guard Lisa Sorgi (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield) and sophomore guard Alicia Kontowski (South Milwaukee, Wis.) each added 14 points. Kontowski also had a team-high nine rebounds for the Inferno.
Freshman guard Kelsey Kochanowski (Oak Creek, Wis.) had game-high five assists for Alverno.
Carol Cayo (Lake Mills, Wis.) led the host Raiders (11-13, 9-9 NAC) with 25 points and 13 rebounds.
Alverno finishes in a tie for second place in the NAC South with Benedictine, but are the South's No. 3 seed due to BU's sweep over the Inferno this season.
The Inferno will travel to Edgewood College, the North's No. 3 seed, for the NAC North/South Challenge game on Saturday at 2 p.m. Alverno defeated Edgewood 76-57, on Jan. 4. in Milwaukee. The challenge games pit the conference's North Division teams versus the South Division teams, based on the final conference standings. The game does not count as a conference game, but may be used as a tie-breaker for the qualifying teams in the NAC Tournament.
