Box Score MILWAUKEE -- Benedictine University defeated host Alverno College for the second time in four games on the Inferno's Senior Night, 74-66, honoring their lone senior this season, Lisa Sorgi.
"Credit Benedictine," Alverno head coach Brad Duckworth said. "Those guys have really presented a tough matchup for us two games in a row."
In addition to tonight, Benedictine defeated Alverno 10 days ago in Lisle, Ill., the only team to beat the Inferno in their last 11 games.
Alverno falls to 12-10 on the season, 10-6 in Northern Athletics Conference play, while the visiting Eagles improve to 10-10, 8-7 NAC.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 19-4 lead on the Inferno, before the lead was cut to seven, 28-21, with 5 minutes, 39 second to play in the first half.
"We were a bit too jacked up in the beginning," Duckworth said. "We didn't come out of the gate real strong. I think (the team) just wanted it a bit too much for Lisa."
A tough shooting performance for the Inferno in the first period, shooting only 11-of-33 from the floor, had the team trailing by as many as 16 in the period, but a decent finish to the half would only have them down 34-27 at the break.
The Inferno would open up the second half on a 9-4 run, cutting the lead to two with 15:27 remaining on a free throw by Sorgi (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield). Alverno would then take their first lead of the game, 50-49, since leading 4-2, on a tip-in by junior guard Gabby Allen (Milwaukee, Wis./Bay View), who ended up with a game-high 19 points.
Alverno would increase their lead to three as freshman guard Kelsey Kochanowski (Oak Creek, Wis.) would score on a fast break layup, but the Eagles would quickly tie the game less than a minute later at 54-54, with 7:03 to play.
Both teams would go into a scoreless drought for the next 2:30, before Sorgi would connect on another fast break layup for the Inferno's final lead of the game.
The Eagles would use a 12-3 run over the next 4 minutes to take a seven point lead, and hit 9-of-10 free throws for the 74-66 final.
Lidia Arias (Bridgeview, Ill.) would record a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for Benedictine.
In addition to Allen's game-high 19 points and team-high nine rebounds, Sorgi would add 14 points and eight rebounds, and Rachel Diedrich would contribute 11 points, eight rebounds and five blocks.
Kochanowski also had a game-high four assists to go along with seven points and five rebounds for the Inferno.
The Inferno could have clinched a home game in the first round of the upcoming NAC Tournament with a victory tonight, but sill can do so by winning their remaining two NAC games next week on the road.
"This doesn't change anything," Duckworth said. "We control our own destiny to host. We just need to take care of our business next week."
Alverno will travel to Dominican University on Monday, Feb. 15, before they head downtown to take on host MSOE on Wednesday, Feb. 17, in the final two conference games of the season. Both games begin at 7 p.m.
