Box Score LISLE, Ill. -- Alverno College fell to host Benedictine University 81-68 tonight in a Northern Athletics Conference contest at the Rice Center, snapping the Inferno's seven-game win streak.
"Benedictine shot the ball really well," Alverno head coach Brad Duckworth said. "It was one of those nights where we were looking for one of our patented comebacks, but we just fell short and they hit their free throws down the stretch."
The Inferno (10-9, 8-5 NAC) trailed by 14 points shortly into the second half, but then went on a 14-3 run to cut the Eagles' (9-9, 7-6 NAC) lead to 47-44 with just over 14 minutes to play. But Alverno simply ran out of gas, playing its fifth game in 10 days, as Benedictine quickly increased their lead back to 10 points in just under 3 minutes.
Alverno would cut the lead to six points at the 8:22 mark, but that would be as close as the team would get the rest of the way, as Benedictine cruised to the 13-point victory shooting 10-of-10 from the free-throw line in the final 4 minutes of the game.
The host Eagles shot 51.7 percent (30-of-58) from the field for the game led by Jenn Bren's (St. Charles, Ill.) game-high 24 points.
Shataya McComb (Kingston, N.Y.) had a team-high 21 points for the Inferno, while Gabby Allen (Milwaukee, Wis./Bay View) had 15.
McComb and Lisa Sorgi (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield) each pulled down a game-high eight rebounds for Alverno, while Sorgi and freshman Kelsey Kochanowski (Oak Creek, Wis.) each had a team-high five assists.
The Inferno were outrebounded 41-32, but forced the Eagles into 20 turnovers compared to their own 18.
Alverno now falls a game back of Wisconsin Lutheran College for first place in the NAC South Division, but still hold a game lead on Benedictine.
The Inferno are next in action on Wednesday as they travel to play at Aurora University at 7 p.m.
