Inferno leads early, but falls to defending champs

MILWAUKEE -- Trailing 7-3 in the first set versus defending Northern Athletics Conference co-champion Benedictine University, Alverno College rallied to a 19-15 lead, but lost the set 25-22 and eventually the match tonight in Reiman Gymnasium in Milwaukee.

The Inferno (1-15, 0-6 NAC) again showed improvement to their offense with a positive attack percentage (.055) for the second-straight match, however the visiting Eagles (16-5, 5-1) mustered a .286 mark and doubled the number of kills the Inferno had with 38 in the match.

In the second set Benedictine had a 4-3 lead and cruised to a 25-15 victory, connecting on a match-high .400 of their attacks in the set.

In the third and final set, the Inferno led at 16-14, and kept things close trailing only by one at 19-18. Yet the Eagles would again pull away for the 25-20 victory.

Tasha Anderson (Waukesha, Wis./North) and Morgan Stuckey (Duncanville, Texas) led the Inferno offense with six kills apiece. Junior setter Ashley Graham (Cudahy, Wis.) had match-highs with 15 assists and four service aces to go along with seven digs on defense.

Chelsea Gulbronson (Milwaukee/Pius XI) had a match and career-high of 12 digs tonight to go along with a pair of aces and three kills.

Still looking for their first home victory of the season, the Inferno will host Concordia University Wisconsin on Friday at 7 p.m. in Alverno's homecoming match at Reiman Gymnasium.
