Box Score MILWAUKEE -- In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Alverno College women's volleyball team is raising money that will go towards breast cancer research and education in partnership with the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.
The Dig for Life fundraiser is a Northern Athletics Conference-wide effort held each season during the month of October in which all 13 member schools gather pledges for every dig (a defensive move to save a spiked volleyball) a player makes during home matches that month. Participants may choose to pledge an amount per dig or make a flat donation. Last year the Inferno raised over $1,000 during this initiative, and look to surpass that total this year.
"Too many people are affected by cancer," Alverno head volleyball coach and cancer survivor Paul Lawson said. "By using volleyball we can help raise money to research what is causing this disease and then put a stop to it."
