Inferno on fire in first win over Edgewood

Box Score

MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College shot over 60 percent in the second half en route to a 76-57 Northern Athletics Conference victory over visiting Edgewood College tonight at Reiman Gymnasium. The win marks the first time in history the Inferno defeated the visiting Eagles.

The Inferno (4-8, 2-4 NAC) shot 57.1 percent (28-of-51) from the field in the game, including 50 percent (4-of-8) from the 3-point arc. Alverno head coach Brad Duckworth wasn't surprised by his team's offense tonight.

"To be truthful that doesn't shock me because we have that kind of basketball team," Duckworth said. "And it's been waiting to come out. We got off the bus after the Superior loss reeling, and the players decided, 'we are going to be a good basketball team' and I think tonight it showed."

Four Inferno players reached double digits in the scoring column led by junior point guard Gabby Allen (Milwaukee, Wis./Bay View) with 20 points on 9-of-16 shooting. Freshman center Rachel Diedrich (Two Rivers, Wis.) recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds to go along with three blocks. Diedrich's 33 blocks, and counting, is a single-season record at Alverno.

Lisa Sorgi (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield) also recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Shataya McComb (Kingston, N.Y.) had 12. Freshman Kelsey Kochanowski (Oak Creek, Wis.) was a basket shy of doubles scoring eight points in the win.

The visiting Eagles (4-8, 4-2 NAC) also came out hot in the first half, taking a 35-34 advantage into intermission. Edgewood shot 46.7 percent in the first period, including an incredible 55.6 percent from the 3-point arc (5-of-9).

But the Inferno's full-court pressure and solid half-court defense held the Eagles to under 25 percent from the field and 3-point line in the second half, forcing 20 turnovers in the game. Emily Decorah (Waunakee, Wis.) led Edgewood with 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting, and Shae Beckwith (East Troy, Wis.) chipped in 10 points.

Alverno took their first double-digit lead of the game, 57-46, with just over 7 minutes to play and never looked back. The Inferno outscored the Eagles 42-22 in the second half for the 19-point victory.

The 57.1 shooting percentage by the Inferno is the highest in program history. The previous record of 56.5 percent was set last season in a 39-point route of Moody Bible.

The Inferno also shot 76.2 (16-of-21) from the free-throw line, marking only the second time this season they shot above 70 percent.

"Tonight I felt was about us," Duckworth said. "The team has recently had some conversations about commitment to each other, and the players decided that what is fun is playing together. We can beat great teams, as we did tonight.

"You look at the stats tonight and think we were hot. We weren't hot. We took good shots, we were patient on offense and we executed. When we do that we are a really good team."

The Inferno are next in action this Wednesday as they host MSOE at Reiman Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
