Alverno shuts down South Division leader for 6th-straight win

Box Score

MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College held visiting Wisconsin Lutheran College to 14 second half points en route to a 64-46 Northern Athletics Conference victory tonight at Reiman Gymnasium, the Inferno's sixth-straight victory.

"Unbelievable!" Alverno head coach Brad Duckworth said. "It's just one game, but it's a lot more than that."

The Inferno (9-8, 7-4 NAC) defeated Wisconsin Lutheran (9-8, 9-3 NAC) for the first time in series history. The Warriors had won the first 11 meetings, including an 88-85 double-overtime victory back on Dec. 2.

The victory also closes the gap on the Warriors' lead in the NAC South Division, as the Inferno are now just one game behind in the loss column, and also sets the record for most conference wins in a season (7) and consecutive wins (6).

The first half went back and forth as neither team gained a lead greater than six points. The Inferno led 25-19 with 6 minutes, 19 seconds to play, but the Warriors would close the half on a 13-4 run for the 32-29 advantage at intermission.

Wisconsin Lutheran shot only 36.8 percent (14-of-38) from the field, but was 40 percent (4-of-10) on 3-point field goals. While the Inferno shot marginally better from the floor at 38.2 percent (13-of-34), they managed to only hit one of their five 3-point attempts.

The second half started with a bang for the Inferno, turning a three point deficit to a seven point lead, 39-32, in less than three minutes. Alverno doubled its 3-point output from the first half in that span, as Lisa Sorgi (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield) and Kelsey Kochanowski (Oak Creek, Wis.) would connect from beyond the arc on back-to-back possessions.

Minutes later Shataya McComb (Kingston, N.Y.) would have one of her game-high five steals and turn it into a fast break basket to increase the Inferno lead to 10 points at 50-40.

Two possessions later Wisconsin Lutheran would score on a layup by Whitney Miller (Germantown, Wis.) at the 11:23 mark to cut the lead to eight, but that would be the visitors' last field goal of the night.

"This is two straight games that we said to Lisa (Sorgi) that you have to stop their best player from doing their best thing," Duckworth said. "She did that in the second half at CUC (on Tuesday) and we won, and did it again tonight on Miller, one of the best players in the league."

McComb and Gabby Allen (Milwaukee, Wis./Bay View) would lead the Inferno the rest of the way offensively, scoring the remaining five field goals of the game. The remainder of the points for both teams would come from the free-throw line.

"I told the team at halftime that we're going man defense, and you're going to stop them," Duckworth said. "And the team played unbelievable man defense in the second half. To hold one of the best teams in the conference to 14 points in the second half, and 46 overall, it's just an outstanding effort."

Alverno shot 51.9 percent (14-of-27) in the second period, and held the Warriors to just 14.3 percent (4-of-28) in the second half, including 0-for-8 from the 3-point line, the major difference in the game.

Alverno was led offensively by McComb with a game-high 17 points, a team-high nine rebounds and three assists, Allen with 15 points and two blocks, and Rachel Diedrich (Two Rivers, Wis.) with 14 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.

Kochanowski added seven points, seven rebounds and three steals, Sorgi added six points, seven rebounds and three steals, and Alicia Kontowski (South Milwaukee, Wis.) added five points, five rebounds and three assists.

Erika Laete (Spokane, Wash.) led Wisconsin Lutheran with 12 points, while Miller had 10.

Alverno is next in action this Saturday, hosting Maranatha Baptist for another NAC showdown. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
