Box Score 2 BELOIT, Wis. -- Day one of match play at the Buc Blast Tournament took its toll on the Alverno College women's volleyball team, as the Inferno dropped both matches, 3-0, to host Beloit and William Penn University for a pair of non-conference losses on Friday night.
The Inferno (0-10 overall) seemed to have a hard time adjusting to Beloit's offense in their first match of the evening. The squad struggled to reach double digits in set points, dropping the match 25-9, 25-10, 25-7 and allowing two Buccaneer players to reach double digits in kills.
Freshman middle blocker Rachel Diedrich (Two Rivers, Wis.) paced the offense with eight kills, while sophomore outside hitter Ashley Graham (Cudahy, Wis.) claimed the high for digs with nine.
The Inferno came out with a little more spark in their first set against William Penn with a 25-13 result, but were unable to quite maintain that fire in the second two sets, posting scores of 25-11 and 25-8 to drop the match.
"We really played hard in our second match after we changed up our line-up," said Alverno head coach Crystal McClure. "Granted we still lost, but we were more satisfied. We were aggressive, we were talking a lot more and our intensity was there."
Diedrich and Graham once again led the offense and defense, respectively. Diedrich had four kills while Graham picked up six digs.
Alverno will continue play at the Buc Blast Tournament tomorrow with matches against Coe College and Northland College.
Although McClure believes Saturday's matches with Coe and Northland will be challenging, she wants her team to continue to see tough competition in order to improve.
"We need to continue to play strong teams in order to interpret, learn and apply new skills to get to where we want to be. At this point, we need to get some rest tonight and go into tomorrow's matches focused."
Match time with Coe is set for 12 p.m. followed directly by the Northland match at 2 p.m.
