MILWAUKEE -- The Alverno College softball team dropped two games to host Wisconsin Lutheran College, 4-3 and 3-0, in the Inferno's Northern Athletics Conference-opener this afternoon.
In game one the Inferno (2-4, 0-2 NAC) scored first in the top of the third inning, as senior catcher Rebecca Schmid (Tigerton, Wis.) recorded the Inferno's first hit of the game, sending home Melissa Bankenbush (Franksville, Wis./Union Grove) on a infield single.
Senior third baseman Andrea Spindler (Greendale, Wis.) would then knock in two more runs on a single to put the Inferno up 3-0. Spindler would hit 2-for-4 in the game with two singles and two RBI.
The Warriors (5-7, 3-1) would answer with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-3 lead.
Yet after an offensive third inning, both teams would each record only hit the next three innings, with the score remaining 4-3.
The Inferno would make things interesting in the seventh inning, loading the bases with a Bankenbush single, and walks by Megan Burgess (Racine, Wis./Park) and Schmid, but Spindler's deep fly ball to left field would be caught for the third out to conclude game one.
In game two, the Inferno were unable to send any runners home, but would outhit the host Warriors five hits to four.
Spindler and junior pitcher Jessica Goetz (Milwaukee, Wis./Greendale Martin Luther) would each go 2-for-3 in game two, while Schmid recorded the Inferno's fifth hit.
Goetz (2-4) would record both pitching decisions and 16 strikeouts on the day, including nine in game one.
The Inferno are next in action tomorrow as they host Concordia University Wisconsin (8-12, 2-2) in a doubleheader starting at Noon at the Alverno Athletic Fields.
