VERONA, Wis. -- The Alverno College softball team dropped a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader to host Edgewood College at Ceniti Park, 10-2 and 10-4.
Due to rescheduled games from inclement weather the Inferno (4-17, 2-13 NAC) played nine games this past week, going 2-7 during that span.
In the first game, Alverno was only able to manage two runs on four hits, compared to Edgewood's 10 runs on 10 hits. Seniors Rebecca Schmid (Tigerton, Wis.) and Andrea Spindler (Greendale, Wis.) lead the Inferno at the plate with a hit and an RBI each.
Sophomore Megan Burgess (Racine, Wis./Park) and senior Melissa Bankenbush (Franksville, Wis./Union Grove) recorded the other two hits in the game.
In game two Alverno fell behind early, giving up a solo home run in the first inning as Edgewood (13-15, 7-7) took the early 1-0 lead. The Inferno would battle back in the third inning, as Schmid scored on a Spindler single through the left side. Three batters later Bankenbush would score on a passed ball to give the Inferno their first lead of the day at 2-1.
The Eagles would retake the lead in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs on four hits for the 4-2 advantage.
With the bases loaded in the top of the fourth, Spindler would crush a shot up the middle, hitting the top of the centerfield fence, batting in her second and third RBI of the game for a 4-4 tie ballgame.
Alverno would hold the hosts scoreless in the bottom of the inning, but would give up two and four runs in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively. The Inferno would muster three more hits the rest of the game for seven total, but would be unable to score any more runs in the game, making the final score 10-4.
Spindler would hit 3-for-4 in game two with a team-high three RBI, while Schmid would score two runs.
Junior pitcher Jessica Goetz (Milwaukee, Wis./Greendale Martin Luther) would record both decisions for Alverno, recording four strikeouts and 18 earned runs for the day.
The Inferno are next in action on Monday as they travel to cross-town rival Mount Mary College in a non-conference doubleheader at Wilson Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3pm.
