Sorgi becomes first 1,000 point scorer in Alverno history in loss to defending NAC champs

Box Score

MEQUON, Wis. -- Senior guard Lisa Sorgi scored 14 points to become the first player in Alverno College history to eclipse the 1,000 point milestone, yet the Inferno fell to host Concordia University Wisconsin, the defending Northern Athletics Conference North Division and tournament champions, 70-55 this afternoon at Buuck Fieldhouse in Mequon, Wis.

"Lisa's really a self-made 1,000 point scorer in college," Alverno head coach Brad Duckworth said. "She just comes out every night and does the same good things."

Sorgi (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield) struggled from the field early in the game going 0-of-5 in the first half, and had only two points on a pair of free throws in the period. But her resilience showed as she shot 50 percent in the second half and made 5-of-7 free throws to score a team-high 14 points in the game, bringing her career total to 1,003 points. Sorgi also had six rebounds and three steals for the Inferno.

"I couldn't be more proud of her tonight," Duckworth said. "It's a great honor for a great career."

Trailing by as many as 15 points in the second half, Alverno (2-4, 1-2 NAC) cut the Falcons' lead to five, 60-55, with 3:37 remaining in the game on a pair of free throws by freshman Kayla Kennedy (Trempealeau, Wis./G-E-T). But the Inferno would get outscored 10-0 the remainder of the game, missing their final eight shots, for the 70-55 final score.

"We just ran out of gas," Duckworth said. "We had the game to five, but you put yourself in a spot where you're down 10, 11, 12--you work so hard to get it close--it's natural to take a deep breath. And then it went from five back to 15 like that."

Alverno shot only 34 percent from the field (18-of-53) compared to the Falcons 48 percent (30-of-62) effort. Concordia (4-2, 3-1 NAC) also outrebounded Alverno 44-24, including 15-5 on the offensive glass.

"They are very well coached and executed very well," Duckworth commented about Concordia. "If you don't come emotionally ready to match their play and style, they are going to do that to a lot of teams."

The Falcons' Tiffany Hendrickson (Ingleside, Ill.) had a game-high 17 points to lead a trio of teammates in double digits. She also had a game-high 11 rebounds for the Falcons.

Freshman center Rachel Diedrich (Two Rivers, Wis.) led the Inferno on the glass with seven rebounds to go along with seven points, a block and a steal.

Junior guard Shataya McComb (Kingston, N.Y.) chipped in 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting, while freshman Kelsey Kochanowski (Oak Creek, Wis.) scored eight points and had a game-high five assists for Alverno.

After dropping a pair of road games to the defending NAC North and South Division champions this past week, the Inferno host three home games in five days beginning on Tuesday, Dec. 8, versus Aurora University, and will look to get back on the winning track. They then host NAC foe Dominican University on Thursday, and Mount Mary College on Saturday in a nonconference game.
