Box Score MILWAUKEE -- The Alverno College women's basketball team used an 18-0 run midway through the first half to distance itself from the visiting Mount Mary College Blue Angels, going on to win 72-46 this afternoon in Reiman Gymnasium.
The nonconference victory keeps the Inferno (3-6) perfect against the crosstown rival, leading the series 10-0, and also snaps a four game losing streak heading into the holiday break.
"Anytime you win against a formidable Division III opponent you take it," Alverno head coach Brad Duckworth said. "We just needed to get the ship headed in the right direction going into Christmas. We had a tough four game stretch in a short amount of time and it felt like we had a snowball going in the wrong direction. I think today helped to push back in the right direction."
Alverno began the game 9-0, but allowed the Blue Angels (0-7) to cut the lead to three at 13-10 with 14 minutes, 17 seconds remaining in the first half. The Inferno then went on their 18-0 run over the next 11 minutes to extend their lead to 21.
Mount Mary would close the gap to 17 points (32-15) at intermission, but that would be as close as the visitors would get the rest of the game. The Inferno would increase their lead to as many as 31 points on multiple occasions in the second half, as all 12 Alverno players in uniform played nearly double digit minutes in the game.
Freshman center Rachel Diedrich (Two Rivers, Wis.) led Alverno with a game-high 16 points and had seven rebounds and four blocks.
Shataya McComb (Kingston, N.Y.) was 7-of-8 from the field for 14 points, Gabby Allen (Milwaukee, Wis./Bay View) had 12 points and a game-high five assists, while Amber Meka (Caledonia, Wis./Thomas More) chipped in nine points and Kelsey Kochanowski (Oak Creek, Wis.) chipped in seven.
Lisa Sorgi (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield) was limited to five points on 2-of-5 shooting, but had a game-high 10 rebounds and four assists in the victory.
The Inferno forced the Blue Angels into 29 turnovers, and committed a season-low 13 turnovers in the win.
Jordan Osley (Milwaukee, Wis./King) led the Blue Angels with 15 points, shooting 3-of-4 from the 3-point line. Mount Mary shot 47.1 percent from the 3-point arc for the game (8-of-17), but managed to shot only 30.5 percent from the field (18-of-59) and 40 percent from the free throw line.
"It was a good entire team win," Duckworth said. "We had solid contribution and double digit minutes from everybody. It was good to see some of our younger players get out there and do some good things. I felt like we executed the entire game."
The Inferno have 16 days off until their next game on Tuesday, Dec. 29, at UW-La Crosse in the La Crosse Holiday Classic. Alverno then faces UW-Superior in the second day of the Holiday Classic. Tuesday's game is set for 7 p.m. and Wednesday's game is at 3 p.m.
