Box Score MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College managed to shoot only 30 percent from the floor and 15 percent from the 3-point arc in the second half of a 74-66 loss to visiting Dominican University tonight in a Northern Athletics Conference contest.
Alverno (2-6, 1-4 NAC) played a good first half, leading for most of the period, including a 38-34 advantage at intermission. The Inferno shot 51.5 percent from the field (17-of-33) and were 2-of-8 on 3-point field goals, but also committed 15 first half turnovers. Alverno lead by as many as eight points twice in the period, but each time allowed the Stars (4-4, 2-2 NAC) to tie the game.
The rim was not as kind to the Inferno in the second half, going 9-of-30 from the field and only 2-of-15 from beyond the arc, while Dominican shot 50 percent from the field and were 4-of-8 from the arc.
The Stars took a 47-45 lead with 13 minutes, 50 seconds to play on a 3-point play by Kayla Blom (Circle Pines, Minn.), who led the Stars with 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting.
Dominican would allow the Inferno to cut the lead to one on multiple occasions, including the 5:09 mark at 60-59, where senior guard Lisa Sorgi (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield) would go 1-of-2 from the free throw line. But that would be as close as the Inferno would get, as the Stars would close out the game on a 14-7 run for the eight point difference in the final score.
Sorgi led Alverno in scoring with 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting and had a game-high nine rebounds, but was only 6-of-10 from the free throw line and committed five turnovers.
Junior guard Gabby Allen (Milwaukee, Wis./Bay View) added 13 points and had two blocked shots, but committed six turnovers in the game.
For the second straight game Alverno outrebounded its opponent, claiming a 37-31 advantage on the boards including 16-9 on the offensive glass, but committed 23 turnovers in the loss.
The Inferno play their third game in five days as they host crosstown rival Mount Mary College on Saturday at 2 p.m. for their last game until after Christmas. Alverno will look to snap their four-game skid against the visiting Blue Angels (0-5) who have never beaten the Inferno in nine tries.
