Alverno Volleyball falls to Edgewood, 3-0

Box Score

MILWAUKEE -- The Alverno College women's volleyball team fell to Edgewood College, 3-0, in a Northern Athletics Conference bout on Friday night in the Reiman Gymnasium.

Although the Inferno (0-17, 0-4 NAC) stuck close with the Eagles in the third set after a five-point serving run by junior setter Kim Reuter (Franklin, Wis.) put Alverno down by just one point, 13-14. But the Eagles would recover to take the set, 25-16, to put an end to the match.

"We still have the problem that when the other team goes on point runs, we just shut down," said Alverno head coach Crystal McClure. "We have to find a way to work through those ups and downs and break out of that mentality."

The Inferno dropped the first two sets of the match, 25-13 and 25-7, respectively.

Sophomore libero Kia Yang (Milwaukee, Wis./Riverside) led an improved Alverno defensive effort with 10 digs followed by sophomore outside hitter Ashley Graham (Cudahy, Wis.) with eight.

"We worked on defense all week and it definitely showed," McClure said. "We had a lot of good defensive plays and made drastic improvements from where we were two weeks ago. It was an all-around effort tonight and I really thought we were able to come together as a team. I was impressed with Kim's play, Rachel (Diedrich) played smart, Ashley was swinging very well and Kia was also able to help our defense out by dominating the back row."

Diedrich, a freshman middle blocker out of Two Rivers, Wis., and Graham led the Inferno at the net with five kills apiece. Reuter also chipped in with a strong effort of 13 assists, six digs and three kills on the night.

Alverno will have a quick turnaround before its next NAC match, as the squad will travel to Maranatha Baptist Bible College tomorrow.

"It's going to be a loud gym tomorrow," McClure said of playing at Maranatha. "We just have to come ready to fight, experience the noise and deal with the distractions so that we learn how to handle it in the future."

Match time at Maranatha is set for 7 p.m. in Watertown, Wis.
