MADISON, Wis. -- The Alverno College women's basketball team played host Edgewood College even for nearly 24 minutes, but failed to come away with the Northern Athletics Conference road victory falling 78-63 at the Edgedome in Madison.
The Inferno (6-8, 3-6 NAC) kept the game tight in the first half, and took their first lead of the game, 28-27, with 1:32 remaining in the period on a Bre Miller (Racine, Wis./Horlick) jumper. Alverno shot nearly 52 percent from the field and committed only five turnovers in the first half, compared to Edgewood's 43 percent shooting and eight turnovers. Yet Edgewood (8-5, 6-1 NAC) would come away with a 33-31 lead heading into the locker room at intermission.
The first four minutes of the second half would go back and forth, and the score was knotted up at 41-41 with 16:29 left to play after two Inferno free throws by sophomore guard Gabby Allen (Milwaukee, Wis./Bay View). Edgewood would then go on an 8-0 run to take the lead for good.
The Eagles shot nearly 70 percent in the second half, compared to the Inferno's 38.5 percent, outscoring the Inferno 45-32 in the period, for the 78-63 final score.
The Inferno shot a dismal 0-of-11 from the three-point arc, failing to hit a three-pointer in a game for the first time this season.
Allen was one of four Alverno players in double figures, scoring a team-high 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting. Miller had 15 points, Joslyn Binkowski (Greenfield, Wis.) had 13 and Lisa Sorgi (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield) added 10.
Binkowski, Miller and Katie Salentine (Muskego, Wis.) lead the Inferno on the glass with five rebounds apiece.
The Eagles were led in scoring by Megan Scheele (New Glarus, Wis.) with a game-high 29 points.
The Inferno will host Moody Bible Institute Tuesday at 7pm at Reiman Gymnasium in Milwaukee.
