Shorthanded Alverno Struggles at Clarke Tournament

DUBUQUE, Iowa -- The Alverno College women's volleyball team lost four straight matches at the Clarke College volleyball tournament in Dubuque this Friday, Sept. 19 and Saturday, Sept. 20.

The Inferno (2-11, 0-1 Northern Athletics Conference) finished seventh in the tournament with a 0-4 record. Briar Cliff University won the tournament championship with a 3-1 record, and virtue of a tie-breaker over host Clarke College and Ashford University, both also finished with a 3-1 record.

The Inferno were without starting middle blocker Robyn Rosenthal (Burlington, Wis./Waterford Union) for the entire tournament and starting setter Kim Reuter (Franklin, Wis.) on Saturday.

On Friday Alverno dropped their opening-tournament match to Coe College in three sets (25-16, 25-10, 25-19). In their second match of the evening, the Inferno lost to host Clarke, 3-0 (25-9, 25-12, 25-14).

On Saturday, the Inferno lost to Iowa Wesleyan College in three sets (25-14, 25-8, 25-16), and then lost their last match of the tournament to Ashford (25-15, 25-8, 25-17).

Alverno looks to bounce back from their current seven-match skid as they face Northern Athletics Conference foe Marian University on Tuesday, Sept. 24. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in Fond du Lac, Wis.
