Box Score MILWAUKEE -- The Alverno College women's basketball team lost a Northern Athletics Conference game to the visiting Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons, putting the Inferno below the .500 mark for the first time this season.
Alverno (2-3, 1-2 NAC) battled the preseason favorites of NAC North Division to a tough 75-65 loss in Reiman Gymnasium in Milwaukee. The Inferno set a new team record by making 24 free throws in the game. The previous game record of 22 team free throws was set on three different occasions, most recently on Nov. 22, 2008 vs. the College of St. Catherine.
The Inferno shot 24-of-27 from the line for an 88.9 percentage, which is third best for the Inferno all-time (95.7 percent on Nov. 26, 2005).
Alverno led by as many as three in the first half, and trailed by as many as six as they struggled from the field shooting under 32-percent (7-of-22). Their first half shooting from the free throw line (17-of-20) keep the score close as they trailed by only three, 35-32, at the break.
After a defensive struggle the first six minutes of the second half, the Inferno would tie the score at 40-40, on a layup by Bre Miller (Racine, Wis./Horlick). That would be as close as Alverno would get the rest of the game, as Concordia Wisconsin (3-2, 3-0 NAC) would go on a 20-7 run to take the biggest lead of the game of 13 points.
Alverno would cut the lead to six on a three point play by sophomore Gabby Allen (Milwaukee, Wis./Bayview)with 2:29 to play, but would manage to score only once more on a layup by Lisa Sorgi (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield) with 1:39 left in the game.
Allen would lead all scorers with 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, and 8-of-9 from the charity stripe.
Three other Inferno players would hit double figures including freshman Alicia Kontowski (South Milwaukee, Wis.) with 17, Miller with 11 and Sorgi with 10.
Kontowski also had a game-high four assists and seven rebounds for the Inferno, which won the battle on the glass 35-30.
Asia Beckum (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) led the Falcons in scoring with 15 points, while Krista Mayyou added 11 points and six rebounds for the visitors.
Alverno looks to get back to the .500 mark on the season as they travel to take on Aurora University on Tuesday, Dec. 9, before hosting Silver Lake College on Saturday, Dec. 13 and Viterbo University on Sunday, Dec. 14.
