Records Break, but Alverno Falls to WLC

Box Score

MILWAUKEE -- Bre Miller and Joslyn Binkowski became all-time leaders at Alverno College this evening, but the Inferno women's basketball team fell, 64-50, to Wisconsin Lutheran College in their conference home opener.

The Inferno (2-2, 1-1 NAC) started off the game with a 5-0 lead, but Wisconsin Lutheran (3-2, 2-0) answered back with a 13-0 run to take a 13-5 lead just six minutes into the game. Alverno would trail by as many as 11 in the first period, but some outside shooting would get them back in the game.

Ashley Dettman (Milwaukee, Wis./Thomas More) would hit a 3-pointer with just under 10 minutes in the first half to begin a 9-0 run.

Miller (Racine, Wis./Horlick) came into tonight's contest tied with Kim Murray (2006) as the all-time leading scorer in school history with 697 points, and became the sole scoring leader with a 3-point basket with 6:46 left to play in the first half, narrowing WLC's lead to one at 19-18.

On the next position a layup by Lisa Sorgi (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield) would give the Inferno the lead, but WLC would end the half on a 17-5 run, capped off by two 3-pointers by Britany Lindert (Milwaukee, Wis./School of the Languages). Alverno would trail, 36-25, going into the break.

In the second half, the Inferno wouldn't get closer than 10, as WLC would cruise to the 14-point victory to take sole position of first place in the Northern Athletics Conference South Division at 2-0.

WLC outrebounded Alverno 41-27, and shot 75-percent from the free throw line compared to Alverno's dismal 38.5-percent from the charity stripe.

Lindert led Wisconsin Lutheran in scoring with 21 points, while Whitney Miller (Germantown, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) would lead WLC on the glass with 11 rebounds.

Binkowski (Greenfield, Wis.) was just two assists shy of Elsa Ferguson's (2007) all-time assist total of 172 coming into the game, but she tallied four in the game tonight to become the Inferno passing leader at 175. Binkowski also led Alverno with a team-high nine rebounds in the game.

Freshman Alicia Kontowski (South Milwaukee, Wis.) would have a team-high 19 points for the Inferno, shooting 5-of-9 from beyond the 3-point arc.

Sorgi also broke into double-digit scoring with 10 on 5-of-11 shooting from the floor.

Alverno will look to bounce back from the loss as they host Concordia University Wisconsin, currently the NAC North Division leader, this Saturday at 2pm.
