MILWAUKEE -- Although the Alverno College women's volleyball team was able to capture a 27-25 victory the second set of its Northern Athletics Conference match with Concordia University Wisconsin, its first set victory in league play this season, it wasn't enough to propel the Inferno to their first NAC match victory of the year as the Falcons would ultimately dominate in the other three sets to secure the match win, 3-1, on Friday, Oct. 3, during Alverno's Homecoming Weekend festivities in Milwaukee, Wis.
The Inferno (2-15, 0-4 NAC) recovered from a 25-9 loss to the Falcons (8-10, 3-1 NAC) in the first set to lead the second set from the onset and pull off the victory.
"Our communication was much better in the second set," said Alverno head coach Crystal McClure, whose team hadn't taken a set against Concordia since 2002. "Our offense was playing smart."
However, the Inferno couldn't get the ball to bounce quite the same way in the third and fourth sets, falling 25-15 in the third and 25-9 in the fourth, partially due to an 11-point serving run by the Falcons' Joanna Kirk.
"We had our highs and our lows tonight," McClure said. "We need to learn to pull through when we're down."
Senior middle blocker/outside hitter Rebecca Schmid (Tigerton, Wis.) continued to dictate the Inferno's offense, leading the squad in kills once again with 10 while also chipping in 11 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Robyn Rosenthal (Waterford, Wis.) followed Schmid at a close second with nine kills. Freshman defensive specialist Mai Kaw Xiong (Milwaukee/Riverside) guided the Inferno's backcourt with 12 digs.
The Inferno will continue match play with tomorrow's triangular at Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee, Wis. Alverno will begin the day with a NAC match against Wisconsin Lutheran at 11 a.m. followed by a non-conference bout with Finlandia University at 1 p.m.
