Becoming just the 12th student-athlete to earn the distinction, Michelle Alexander joins elite company of those to win Athlete of the Year accolades. The inaugural award was handed out following the 2002-03 season, and has featured 12 different winners, including six two-time winners.
Alexander was Alverno's lone All-Conference selection for the 2019-20 season, becoming the first Inferno tennis student-athlete to earn such honors since the 2016-17 season, when a pair of Inferno; Asia Butler-Yeo '18 and Brooke McBain '17 earned Singles All-Conference accolades. Butler-Yeo was also the last tennis team member to earn Athlete of the Year honors, which came following the 2015-16 academic year.
The New Mexico-native, who currently hails from Long Island, New York, put together another strong individual season for the Inferno during her senior campaign, in which she won five matches in singles play and notched an additional four wins in doubles competition. Her combined nine wins on the season places her with 51 career wins, which is fourth on the all-time wins list, while also finishing fourth on the singles wins list with 26 and fourth with 25 doubles victories.
This past season she recorded four of her five singles wins in conference play, while all four of her doubles wins came against conference opponents. Her lone singles win against a non-conference opponent came against UW-Stevens Point on September 22, while she also added wins against Wisconsin Lutheran, Marian, Dominican and Concordia Chicago, and registered doubles wins against Lakeland, Wisconsin Lutheran, Dominican and Concordia Chicago.
