Jimmy Muñoz enters his second season as head coach of theInferno volleyball team.
Muñoz guided the Inferno to a school record 10 wins inhis first season at the helm in 2013, and snappeda 78-match and nearly-seven-year conference losingstreak with a 3-1 victory over host Rockford University in theNorthern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener.
Prior to Alverno, Muñoz was an assistant coach atDivision I Bradley University, and was head coach at UmpquaCommunity College in Roseburg, Ore., prior to his stint with theBraves. While at Bradley, he was primarily in charge of the Braves'defense and middles and guided the team to its best digs and blocksper set averages in five years.
In 2011, his only season at Umpqua, Muñoz led theRiverhawks to a 19-25 finish after inheriting a program that went7-33 in '10. His '11 Riverhawks qualified for the NorthwestAthletic Association of Community Colleges postseason for the firsttime in program history with a 3-7 conference record -- good formore league wins that season than the previous five seasonscombined (2).
A California native, Muñoz coached at the high schoollevel for eight years in his home state. He served as head girls'volleyball coach at Mater Dei High School from '07-10 andconcurrently coached the boys' team for his final two years at hisalma mater.
As the '09 conference coach of the year, he led the boys' squadto the California Division 2 State title and a 46-22 record in twoseasons. At the helm of the girls' program, he helped the Monarchsto a California State quarterfinal appearance in his first seasonwith the team.
Muñoz spent the four previous seasons at Los AlamitosHigh School. After he served a year as an assistant coach, he wasthen promoted to head coach for his final three seasons and led theprogram to a 95-14 record in that span. A three-time coach of theyear selection, Muñoz led the Griffins to a pair ofback-to-back Division 1 state titles in '05 and '06.
Muñoz is a '05 graduate of California State UniversityLong Beach, and recently earned his master's degree in educationfrom National University in '11. He resides with his wife Pam anddaughter Gianna in Fox Lake, Ill.
