Ben Lipson was hired as the sixth head coach in the history of Alverno softball and enters his fourth season as head coach of the Inferno for the 2022 season.
In his third year at the helm of the program, Lipson helped a team that hadn't played in over a year to get back on the field during a COVID-19 shortened season. Following the conclusion of the 29-game slate, sophomore Izzy Torres '23 was selected as an All-Conference Honorable Mention selection by the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
During his second season with the team, Lipson guided the Inferno to four victories in an abbreviated 10-game schedule. As a team, the Inferno scored 24 runs over the team's 10-game stretch, including three home runs and five doubles as the team recorded 56 hits. The pitching staff struck out 63 batters over 59 1/3 innings pitched as the unit picked up four wins and one save.
During his first season with the program, Lipson helped the Inferno get off to the best start in program history as the team opened the season with an 8-3 start as the team went on to win 12 games total on the season. During the year the offense reached new heights with 198 runs scored, including 15 home runs. Following the season, senior Andie Vandertie '19 was named All-Conference second team following her 40-game campaign, while during the season classmate Carina Jimenez was named the NACC Position Player of the Week, while also earning National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top Performer of the Week accolades for the week of March 4-10.
Prior to Alverno, Lipson was a member of the softball staff at Middlebury College in Vermont, where he served as an assistant coach for four seasons. During his stint with the Panthers, Middlebury amassed 78 wins including two postseason berths to the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Tournament.
Prior to his most recent term at Middlebury, Lipson was on the Division I Quinnipiac staff in Connecticut, where he served as both an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator from December of 2010 through July of 2012.
Lipson spent the 2010 softball season on the Middlebury staff, which came after a two-year stay as an assistant coach at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin.
He served as the head coach at Stephens College at the NAIA level from August 2007 through May of 2008 following a one-season term as the head coach at Independence Community College and as the Interim Head Coach at Mount Mercy College in the spring of 2004.
The University of Memphis-graduate got his coaching start as a volunteer assistant at Division I Bradley in 2002, followed by a one-year stop at UNC-Wilmington as an assistant coach in 2003.
Lipson earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Management in 2002 from Memphis, and later earned his Master’s Degree in Kinesiology in August 2007 from Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas.
