MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Alverno College volleyball team competed at home on Friday evening, hosting Judson University at Reiman Gymnasium. The Inferno battled throughout the match but fell to the Eagles, 3-0, by scores of 28-26, 25-19, and 25-22.
Sophomore
Mary Needham (San Tan Valley, Ariz./Poston Butte) led the Inferno offensively with 12 kills, while sophomore
Sofia Mitchell (Denver, Colo./Denver School of Science & Technology: Montview) added five kills and a team-high four blocks. Freshman
Jayden Koziol (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale) also contributed seven kills while hitting .316, and
Olivia McCann (Ennis, Texas/Life High School Waxahachie) finished with seven kills.
Sophomore
Brooklynne Hereford (Beloit, Wis./Beloit Memorial) anchored the defensive effort with a team-high 20 digs, while
Beyonca Hereford (Beloit, Wis./Beloit Memorial) recorded 23 assists. Junior
Keegan Russell (South Bend, Ind./Clay) added eight digs and two service aces, while Alverno finished with six total service aces as a team.
As a team, Alverno recorded 33 kills and 51 digs while adding six service aces and six total blocks. The Inferno also held Judson to eight kills in the third set after the Eagles recorded 14 and 16 kills in the first two sets.
With the result, Alverno falls to 1-5 on the season, while Judson improves to 4-8. The Inferno will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. against Maranatha Baptist in Reiman Gymnasium.
Alverno came out strong in the opening set, overcoming an early deficit and battling back to tie the score at 17-17. The Inferno continued to fight late, eventually taking a 25-24 lead following a McCann kill. Judson answered to force extra points, and the Eagles ultimately claimed the set, 28-26.
The second set saw Judson take an early lead, but Alverno continued to battle and pulled within one at 10-9. The Eagles created separation in the middle portion of the set, taking a 21-17 advantage before closing out the set, 25-19.
Alverno again showed its fight in the third set, overcoming a 3-0 deficit and putting together a strong run to take an 8-4 lead. The Inferno maintained the advantage through the middle of the set, leading 13-10 before Judson battled back to tie the score at 13-13. The Eagles eventually took a 20-18 lead, but Alverno continued to stay within striking distance before Judson finished the match, 25-22.
Alyssa Burke led the offensive attack with 12 kills, and Alina Romera had a double-double with 16 assists and 11 digs, and also had six service aces.
