MADISON, Wis. – The Alverno Basketball team was back on the road this Saturday at the Todd Wehr Edgedome in Madison to take on the Edgewood Eagles to close out the 2023-24 regular season, but fell by a score of 95-49.
The Inferno were led by
Shiauna Nixon-Boyd who shot better than 50% from the field as she led the team with both 13 points and five rebounds and also chipped in with an assist on the offensive side of the ball.
Riley Spencer had 11 points while also grabbing five rebounds.
Dionna Woodson finished the contest with nine points and four rebounds.
Kyla Jamerson and
Victoria Parra both finished with contributing seven points each respectively.
Nixon—Boyd lifted the lid on the scoring as the Inferno won the tip as she laid the ball in for the early 2-0 lead. After Edgewood scored the next four points, Jamerson picked up a three pointer to cut the lead 6-5. The Inferno trailed by three, but a jumper by Nixon-Boyd answered the four-point run by Edgewood but the Eagles closed out the quarter on an 10-0 run, as Jamerson collected a jumper to keep the Inferno within eight scores at 22-12 after the opening stanza.
The Eagles scored the first 15 points of the second quarter to take a 20-point lead at 27-12 but a Spencer three-ball ended the rally. After another jumper by Edgewood, Woodson knocked down a free throw to pull the Inferno within 28. Edgewood closed out the quarter on an 4-0 run to take a 48-18 lead into the locker room.
Alverno was only outscored by 10 points in the third quarter, as Nixon-Boyd and Woodson had the first three baskets of the half for the Inferno while Nixon-Boyd connected on a free throw midway through the period. Edgewood cashed in a late layup to send the game into the fourth with Alverno trailing, 73-33.
The Eagles ran away late with the game and capped off the contest with its largest lead of the night as Edgewood picked up the 46-point win.
With the loss Alverno close out the 2023-24 regular season with a (3-22, 1-15 NACC) record.
