Shiauna Nixon-Boyd scored a game-high 22 points, and
Morgan Golabowski and Gemini Ventura netted 14 and 13 points to lead the Alverno College women's basketball team but fell 70-65 in overtime to Mount Mary University on Monday evening inside the Bloechl Center.
It was a slow start for both the Inferno and Blue Angels, with 12 points in the first five minutes of the game, split 9-3 in favor of Alverno. Shiauna scored the first bucket for the Inferno at 9:48, with
Riley Spencer notching a layup to grow the lead 11-3. By the end of the hard-fought first quarter, the Inferno had a 20-9 advantage.
To start the second quarter, Morgan started the scoring with a jump shot at the 9:22 mark to give the Inferno a 22-11 lead. The Blue Angels answered with a jump shot at the 2:09 mark to take a 27-26 lead.
Mount Mary would add additional points in the remaining minutes to take a 35- 26 edge at the half.
Riley Spencer opened the second half with a three pointer at 8:00, followed by Shiauna's jump shot to cut Mount Mary's lead 37-31. The Inferno then tied the game with
Gemini Ventura securing a tree pointer and a free throw to make the game 37 all. A three pointer by Gemini closed out the scoring of the quarter to cut the Blue Angles lead 43-42.
The fourth and final quarter began with
Riley Spencer basket at 8:37, then AnaCristina Rodriguez- Ross collected a basket to tie the game 49 all. Nixon-Boyd then added a basket tying the game 51 all. Rodriguez-Ross added another basket at the 3:02 mark to advance Alverno's score 53-52. Morgan added the final basket for Alverno to tie the score 57 all to force overtime.
The Blue Angles would control the tempo adding 13 points to cruise to the 70-65 victory.
The Inferno shot 33.8% from the floor (25-74), making 5-22 three point attempts and 10-17 free throws. Mount Mary shot 37.5% (24-64), making 7-23 three point attempts and 15-25 free throws. Both teams ended the game with 48 boards.
Alverno will be back in action on Friday when the Inferno host Elmhurst inside Reiman Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 pm.
