Women’s Basketball Downed by Lakeland University, 79-62

MILWAUKEE – Sophomore Shiauna Nixon-Boyd went for a game-high 14 points on Monday night, but the rest of the Inferno shot just 20-for-64 (31.3%) from the floor at home inside Reiman Gymnasium, as the Alverno College women's basketball team suffered a 79-62 defeat to the Lakeland University Muskies. Alexis Johnson scored 17 points to lead four Muskies in double digits in the victory.
With the loss, Alverno falls to 3-16 (1-9 NACC), while Lakeland improves to 5-1 (3-7 NACC).

Lakeland put the hammer down early, with a 30-18 advantage in the first quarter, on the way to a 37-point first half and a four-point halftime lead (37-33). The Inferno kept things tighter in the second half, but could not put a dent in the lead, as the Muskies cruised to the 17-point victory.

Alverno forced Lakeland into 26 turnovers -- compared to just 22 for the Inferno -- but only converted that advantage into a 23-21 edge in points off of turnovers, thanks in large part to a poor shooting night. The red and black shot just 20-for-64 (31.3%) from the floor and an ugly 5-for-16 (31.3%) from the three-point line, while the Muskies countered with 28-for-65 (43.1%) from the field. Lakeland erased the turnover margin, and then some, with its work on the glass, as the Muskies outrebounded Alverno, 49-40.

Nixon-Boyd's 14 points led all players and paced one Inferno in double digits, as she was joined by Kyla Jamerson with 12. Keeshya Bellows finished with eight points. Riley Spencer and Dionna Woodson collected seven points each respectively/ Morgan Whitten and Madalyn Kavalary added five points each. Rounding out the scoring for the Inferno was Lila Alramahi with four points.

On the other side of the ledger, Johnson had 17 points and one rebound, while Jenna Caterino added 13 of her own. The pair were joined in double figures by A.T. Bartlett (12 points) and Jenna Shea  (10 points).
The Inferno will host Rockford University on Wednesday evening which is Faculty/Staff Appreciation. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. inside Reiman Gymnasium.
