Hot Shooting from Three Not Enough for Alverno versus Rockford

ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Alverno basketball team traveled for its final regular season road game of the 2021-22 season on Saturday, taking on the Rockford Regents at the Seaver Center. The Regents took the game by a score of 80-56.

The Inferno were hot from beyond the arc, connecting on 52.9% of shots taken from deep as Alverno finished the night with nine made three-pointers, one shy of the team's season high of 10 set back in November against Mount Mary.

Freshman Jewel Zahradka led the Inferno with four three-pointers as she registered a season-best 17 points, while also pulling down six rebounds. Sophomore Courtney Zarda added another three long-range shots as she ended the game with nine points. Senior Dom Hudson and freshman Morgan Golabowski rounded out the three-point shots for the Inferno.

Hudson was second on the team with 10 points to go along with three rebounds, three assists and one steal. Golabowski had eight points overall on the night, securing the team's two lone blocks on the game to go along with three rebounds and a team-best four assists and a steal.

Freshman Lauryn Hilliard had six points and was tied for the team lead with four assists, as she corralled five rebounds and picked up one steal. Junior Angie Reutgen had two points with two rebounds and two assists, while sophomore Kiara Ellison picked up four points and had one rebound. Freshman Olivia Daugherty had one steal and one assist.

The Regents took an early lead in the first series of the contest, with a 14-2 lead at the 2:33 mark of the first quarter. Hilliard sank a pair from the field as Alverno finished the quarter with six points, trailing by a 14-6 margin.

After five unanswered by the Regents in the second quarter, Ellison connected on a layup and a jumper to get the Inferno back within nine at 19-10 with 6:40 left in the half. Another four points by Rockford put the Regents ahead by a 23-10 score, but the Inferno got hot in the final portion of the second quarter.

Zarda drained an uncontested three-pointer from the left elbow followed by a three ball by Zahradka. Rockford picked up one free throw, before Zahradka connected on her second-straight three-pointer to pull Alverno back within five. Rockford made a layup before Golabowski knocked down a three pointer to trim the deficit to 26-22 with 2:56 to go.

Rockford closed out the half on a 7-5 rally, with Zahradka connecting on a two and three-point shot to trim the halftime score to 33-27 in favor of the Regents.

Despite the last-second shot in the opening half, and sharp shooting in the second quarter, the Inferno were unable to continue its run in the third quarter as the Regents outscored Alverno 25-11 to take a 58-38 score into the final quarter.

In the fourth, the Inferno scored 18 points with five each from both Hudson and Golabowski, and three each from Zahradka and Zarda but the Regents scored 22 in the period to pull away late at 80-56.

Alverno (1-20, 0-18 NACC) will wrap up the regular season on Tuesday evening at Reiman Gymnasium at 7 p.m., when the Inferno play host to the Concordia Wisconsin Falcons. Prior to the game, the Inferno will be celebrating 'Senior Day'.
