Basketball Pays Visit to Non-Conference Lawrence on Tuesday Evening

APPLETON, Wis. – The Alverno Basketball team returned to non-conference play for the penultimate time on Tuesday evening, taking on the Lawrence Vikings at Alexander Gym and falling to its host by a 72-39 score.
 
Freshman Camiria Sardin led the way for the Inferno with eight points on the game, while corralling five rebounds and providing the team's lone block of the contest. Five member of the Inferno lineup also chipped in with five points on the night as freshmen Kyla Jamerson, Tyee Rhodes, Mariah Smith, Riley Spencer and Morgan Whitten all had five points on the night.
 
Whitten led the team with three steals, as she was tied with sophomore Olivia Daugherty with the team lead in swipes. Whitten also led the Inferno with two assists. Sophomore Jewel Zahradka had four rebounds, while junior Mya Roberts had two points on the game. Freshman Adrianna Sapp led the Inferno with 10 rebounds and also added four points, while junior Victoria Parra had one assist and one rebounds on the game.
 
Lawrence led by three early in the game before Sardin answered back with a pair from the stripe, after the Vikings took a five-point lead it was Spencer to answer back with a three-pointer off of a feed by Daugherty to shrink the lead to two at 7-5. Alverno tied the game at seven with a layup by Sapp.
 
Sardin kept the Inferno close late with a layup in the opening quarter to make the score 13-11 in favor of Lawrence, before the Vikings scored the final three of the period to take a 16-11 lead into the second quarter.
 
Alverno was unable to muster any offense in the second quarter, after attempting just a few shots from the floor overall. The Vikings outscored Alverno 29-2 in the period to take a 45-13 lead into the halftime break.
 
In the second half, Alverno and Lawrence were even through the third quarter with each side scoring nine points apiece, and the Inferno hanging tough with Lawrence in the fourth with the Vikings edging out the Inferno by one point in the period.
 
Alverno (1-8, 0-4 NACC) will close out 2022 with the final home game of the year, and last non-conference game of the season as the Inferno will host Blackburn for a 7 p.m. start inside Reiman Gymnasium next Tuesday, December 20.
