DE PERE, Wis. – The Alverno Volleyball team recorded nine blocks on the night, matching its highest total since the 2017 season, as the Inferno fell to the host St. Norbert Green Knights in three sets.

The nine blocks was the most since the team recorded nine against Monmouth on September 16 of the 2017 season. Leading the way on the block party was freshman
Lynnica Harley, who tallied six blocks on the night, including one of the solo variety.

The six total blocks places Harley in a tie for seventh place on the single-match total blocks, while her five assisted blocks places her in a tie for fourth on the single-match assisted blocks record.
Five other Inferno were credited with two blocks on the night including senior
Alex McMath, junior
Selena Upshur, sophomore
Rolin West, and freshmen
Natalie Onozie and
Jalea Taylor.

West led the team with 12 kills on the evening, while Onozie was second with seven and Upshur was third on the team with five. McMath led Alverno with 12 assists, with Onozie finishing the match with nine, while freshman
Breann Flannery added a pair.

Alverno had three aces on the night, with one each coming from McMath, sophomore
Izzy Gianniou and freshman
Sharisty Kooch. Defensively, Flannery had 15 digs, followed by McMath with 13 and West with a dozen.

St. Norbert won the opening set with a strong showing, picking up the first-set win by a 25-8 score. The Inferno flipped the switch in the second set, forcing the score beyond 25, falling in the second set by a 29-27 difference.

Alverno opened up an early lead in the second set at 3-1 behind kills from Upshur and Onozie as well as an ace by Kooch. The lead swelled to 10-5 and 13-7 before the Green Knights rolled off five unanswered points to trim the Inferno lead to one. Alverno got a 17-13 lead back but St. Norbert knotted the score at 17 before the teams were locked in a deadlock heading into the latter stages of the set before it was ultimately the Green Knights to pick up the two-point win.

In the third set, St. Norbert took the opening four points before Alverno collected the next three spearheaded by a kill by Kooch. The Inferno were only able to close the gap to two on four occasions in the middle stages of the set before the Green Knights took a 19-17 lead and made it 24-17 before ultimately taking the set, 25-18.

Alverno (4-11, 0-5 NACC) will be back in action on Friday evening, when the team visits the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks for a 7 p.m. start at the Keating Sports Center.
