Basketball Stymied by Wisconsin Lutheran in Home Matchup

MILWAUKEE – The Alverno basketball team hosted the #13/17 Wisconsin Lutheran Warriors on Tuesday evening inside Reiman Gymnasium, falling to its guest by a score of 74-30.
 
Alverno was led offensively by junior Angie Reutgen, who tallied 11 points on five field goals, while also picking up seven rebounds in the effort. Sophomore Courtney Zarda had five points, on a three-pointer and a pair of free throws, while also tying for the team lead with two steals. Sophomore Sofia Jorgensen also had five points and two assists in the effort.
 
Senior Dom Hudson picked up four points, and had one assist and a pair of rebounds, while classmate Mikayla Tessay and sophomore Kiara Ellison each had two points apiece. Sophomore Jewel Zahradka led the team with nine rebounds, all defensive, and had one point as well as the team's lone steal on the night.
 
Wisconsin Lutheran opened the game with a basket before Reutgen tied the contest at two. The next nine points all came from the Warriors before Hudson ended the run with a jumper. After a quick answer by the Warriors, Reutgen corralled a layup to pull Alverno back within seven at 13-6 with 4:09 left in the opening stanza.
 
The teams exchanged thee pointers as Zarda knocked down the long-range shot for the Inferno before Hudson connected on last-second jumper to answer a late basket by the Warriors as Alverno trailed by seven at 18-11 heading into the second quarter.
 
The Warriors extended their lead in the two middle periods, outscoring Alverno by a 43-7 margin heading into the final quarter of play.
 
Reutgen got the scoring started with a jumper on the first Inferno possession, before the Warriors scored the next seven points to take a 68-20 advantage. Tessay connected on a layup off of a Zarda feed, before Jorgensen connected on one from the line. Zahradka added her free throw, before Zarda added a pair from the stripe to give Alverno six unanswered points. Jorgensen added a pair of jumpers late in the quarter to cap off the scoring for the Inferno at 30, as the Warriors eased to a 74-30 victory.
 
Alverno (1-14, 0-8 NACC) will be on the road for its next three contests, as the team will visit Aurora at 2 p.m. on Saturday, before trips to St. Norbert on Tuesday, February 1, and Illinois Tech on Thursday, February 3.
